On May 17, Dang Van Ngu Hospital (under the Central Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology) informed that the hospital's doctors had just received a special case of a 4-year-old girl co-infected with many types of liver and lung worms.
The patient was from Ta Ngao commune, Sin Ho, Lai Chau province. The child was admitted to the hospital in a conscious state, with a swollen nodule on the left side of the abdomen, no change in skin color, mild pain when examining the epigastric region, eating little, and not fussy.
According to the patient's family, about two months ago the child had pain in the epigastric region, pain in the left flank, accompanied by fever, but because the child had measles, the family did not take him to the doctor.
Recently, the child had pain in the epigastric region and his family took him to Lai Chau Provincial Hospital for examination and discovered liver damage. The child was then taken to another central medical facility for examination and given medication as prescribed, but the above condition did not change.
The family also added that every day after school hours, the child stays home to play with his siblings and often has the habit of grilling and eating stone crabs.
Children are assigned to do tests, complete blood cell analysis of 22 indicators, biochemistry, immunology, concentrated stool examination. Tests for antibodies to large liver flukes, lung flukes, general abdominal ultrasound, ultrasound of the soft tissue of the left abdominal wall...
According to the treating doctor, the child had a liver and bile abscess and ectopic position in the abdominal wall muscle due to large liver flukes co-infected with lung flukes, roundworms, and small liver flukes.
Liver fluke disease usually occurs when eating raw vegetables containing worm larvae or drinking water containing infective larvae. The above child case was noticed by doctors due to ectopic liver fluke co-infection with lung fluke.
According to doctors at Dang Van Ngu Hospital, liver fluke or fluke diseases have existed for a long time. Patients often do not pay attention so the disease is not detected early. Only when there are unusual signs or when going to a medical facility is the disease detected.
Symptoms of people infected with large liver flukes as well as other parasitic diseases include: Digestive disorders, diarrhea, which can last for a long time and may be accompanied by constipation, along with symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or symptoms of poor appetite, weight loss...
Doctors also said that the case of a 4-year-old child with liver damage and ectopic damage due to large liver flukes co-infected with lung flukes, roundworms, and small liver flukes is a rare case of large liver flukes. The cause of the 4-year-old child being infected with large liver flukes is not excluded from daily activities, the child may have accidentally eaten or come into contact with the source of the disease without knowing it.
To prevent liver fluke and other parasitic diseases, doctors recommend that individuals pay attention to personal hygiene (especially washing hands with soap and cutting nails short), especially before eating, eating safely, exercising to improve the body's resistance, and not eating undercooked stone crabs. At the same time, when there is a suspicion of infection, one should go for examination and testing to be diagnosed and treated promptly. For patients after being cured, it is necessary to monitor their health and comply with disease prevention measures to avoid re-infection.
For the community, to prevent diseases caused by parasites, experts recommend that people should not eat uncooked foods such as undercooked aquatic vegetables, undercooked grilled stone crabs, fish salad, not drink raw water, and not eat raw animal liver./.
