On October 14, according to information from Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City, an 11-year-old girl named PNBK, residing in Ho Chi Minh City, was brought to Children's Hospital 2 by her family in a state of numbness in her limbs, weakness in both legs, and prolonged neck pain.
Diagnostic imaging results showed that the baby had a fractured and dislocated cervical vertebrae C1-C2, with severe spinal cord compression - a condition that threatens quadriplegia or respiratory arrest at any time.
The baby's mother recounted that two years ago while rollerblading, the baby fell backwards but showed no signs of anything unusual so the family did not take the baby to the doctor.
It was not until the baby showed signs of increasing paralysis that the family took him to the doctor and he was transferred to Children's Hospital 2 for emergency surgery.
Under the direction of Dr. Nguyen Thanh Do - Deputy Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Children's Hospital 2, the surgical team performed an 8-hour surgery, fixing two cervical vertebrae with spinal-stiffening devices and decompressing the patient's spinal cord.
"The cervical spine is an extremely difficult surgical area, especially in children. Just one small mistake can affect the respiratory center and cause the patient to stop breathing right on the operating table," Dr. Do shared.
Thanks to the modern spinal nerve conduction monitoring system and the in-depth experience of the medical team, the surgery was successful. After a week, the patient's limbs were no longer numb, the surgical wound healed well, and he began to walk again.
"If a child has neck pain, numbness in the arms or legs, or weakness in the limbs after a fall, even if only briefly, parents should take them for a cervical spine scan to detect the injury early," Dr. Do recommends.
