According to statistics from the People's Committee of Bang Mac commune, the current area of anise trees in the commune is nearly 1,700 hectares. Of this, over 1,300 hectares are currently producing fruit, scattered across all 15 villages of the commune with more than 1,800 households involved in cultivation. This is the main crop of the commune, helping people develop their economy .
Mr. Trieu Van Viet, from Khau Tao village, Bang Mac commune, said: "My family planted about 0.5 hectares of anise trees in 1994. Previously, due to a lack of fertilizer and forest care, the anise yield was very low, only about 1 ton/ha. Since 2021, with guidance from professional staff at all levels and support from the commune government, my family has focused on caring for the anise forest using organic methods. Accordingly, my family has implemented many measures such as applying organic fertilizer periodically once a year, clearing and removing weeds in the anise forest... After only one year, my family's anise forest has improved noticeably. The anise canopies have developed strongly, and the yield has reached 2.5 - 3 tons/ha."
Not only Mr. Viet's family, but many households in the commune also participate in caring for anise trees using organic methods, bringing economic benefits. It is known that 2021 was the first year Bang Mac commune implemented the model of planting and caring for anise trees using organic methods, covering approximately 120 hectares. After only one year of care, the organic anise area achieved outstanding yields compared to anise forests cultivated using traditional methods. From the end of 2021 to the present, the People's Committee of Bang Mac commune has coordinated with specialized agencies to guide and support local people in expanding the area of organic anise cultivation.
Accordingly, every year, the commune, in coordination with specialized agencies, organizes 1-2 training and awareness sessions for households growing anise. The training content mainly focuses on the advantages of improving the yield and quality of anise fruit when grown organically. At the same time, the commune People's Committee has promoted and encouraged households to establish cooperatives to standardize the process of planting and caring for anise trees. As a result, the area of organic anise in the commune has expanded. Specifically, to date, the entire commune has nearly 500 hectares of organic anise with 560 participating households. Among them, these households have established 8 cooperatives for organic anise production. According to the commune People's Committee's assessment, the yield of organic anise has increased by 40-60% compared to anise grown using traditional methods.
In addition, every year, the commune, in coordination with the Chi Lang Regional Forestry Department, implements programs to support the provision of anise seedlings to local people. For example, from the beginning of 2025 to the present, people in the commune have received support for nearly 38,000 anise seedlings. At the same time, households growing anise in the area also benefit from support programs on bio-fertilizers, anise containers, etc. Also in 2025, the commune received 800 million VND from the National Target Program for New Rural Development to implement a production linkage model along the value chain, contributing to ensuring the market for the people's anise products.
Mr. Hoang Van Trung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bang Mac commune, said: In the period 2025 - 2030, the commune has a plan to replace old anise forests over 50 years old with a total area of over 318 hectares. This will contribute to improving the productivity and quality of anise trees, helping people continue to develop their economy. In the future, the commune will continue to promote propaganda, guidance, and support for people to expand the area of organic anise cultivation, helping people develop a sustainable economy from anise.
Practical results show that the shift to organic farming is opening up a sustainable path for Bang Mac star anise cultivation. With guaranteed yield, quality, and market access, people have more motivation to expand their cultivated area and increase their income.
