Cho Ray Hospital gives Tet bonuses of 60 to over 100 million VND to each employee, while security guards, nurses, and the director of Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital all receive 75 million VND per person.
In previous years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many hospitals faced financial difficulties, no difference in revenue and expenditure, many obstacles in purchasing drugs and medical equipment and supplies... salaries and bonuses of medical staff decreased. This year, medical examination and treatment activities have recovered, many difficulties have been resolved, helping hospitals develop and increase revenue. The Department of Health recorded an increase of 11% in outpatient visits to hospitals in general in the city compared to 2022 and 6% compared to 2020, the number of inpatient visits also increased significantly.
"Covid-19 is under control, the number of patients is higher, the hospital invests in many new techniques, increasing patient satisfaction... Thanks to that, the hospital's revenue has increased, helping to improve the income of medical staff," a representative of Cho Ray Hospital explained on January 22.
This year, Cho Ray will give a Tet bonus to employees who have worked for 12 months, regardless of position, with the lowest amount being around VND60 million. This bonus is 2.5 times higher than last year, and the highest ever. Depending on the position, long-time employees at Cho Ray can receive more than VND100 million.
Normally, specialized hospitals have higher Tet bonuses than general hospitals, due to the characteristics of in-depth examination and treatment, less emergencies, and better revenue. Therefore, the Tet bonus level of Cho Ray Hospital (general) this year is considered by doctors and nurses to be "very impressive" and in the top group.

Also a general hospital, Gia Dinh People's Hospital rewards 20-30 million VND per employee, a 30% increase compared to last year. Hospital leaders said that Gia Dinh regularly receives and treats serious cases, provides emergency care to many anonymous and homeless patients, and has to mobilize many sources to support hospital fees for patients. "It's more difficult so the rewards cannot be compared to specialized hospitals," said a hospital representative, adding that this year, thanks to the increase in the number of medical examinations and treatments, the hospital has a larger difference in revenue and expenditure, so the bonus is higher than before.
Dermatology Hospital (specialty) this year is still in the group with the highest Tet bonus in the public health sector. From security guards to nurses, directors all receive the same amount of 75 million VND, 5 million VND higher than last year. Adding the 13th month salary, the city's support... an employee of Dermatology Hospital can receive a bonus of more than 100 million VND.

Many other specialized hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City also recorded higher Tet bonuses than last year. The Eye Hospital gave a bonus of VND20 million for the New Year and VND20 million for the Lunar New Year. Doctors and nurses at the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital received a total bonus of VND41 million, nearly 1.4 times higher than last year. The hospital director and nurses received the same bonus.
Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital also gave regular bonuses, each employee received 12 million VND, including the director. Last year, during Tet, the hospital faced many financial difficulties, each employee received an additional income of 8 million VND from the hospital's welfare fund.
The Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute gives each employee a bonus of 10 million VND for the New Year and 35 million VND for the Lunar New Year, in addition to the 13th month salary. Last year, thanks to the recovery of medical examination and treatment, attracting many patients thanks to improved techniques, the average income of employees here increased to about 26 million VND, more than 3 million VND compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, on the afternoon of January 22, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that in addition to hospitals that have Tet bonuses, many medical facilities are still having difficulty finding funding to reward their employees. Four facilities that have not received Tet bonuses include Saigon General Hospital, Le Van Viet Hospital, Ben San Leprosy Treatment Area, and the Population Department.
Public hospitals with Tet bonuses ranging from a few hundred thousand to less than 5 million VND include Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital, Nhan Ai, District 8, Trung Vuong, District 6, Binh Chanh District, Cu Chi District, Cu Chi Regional General Hospital, and Ho Chi Minh City Medical Examination Center. As for District 4 Hospital, the leaders have not yet finalized the bonus level.
The leaders of the Department of Health said that one of the reasons for the difference in Tet bonuses is that hospitals must be financially autonomous while hospital fees have not been calculated properly, and the labor force of medical staff may be equal but their income levels are very different due to the specific specialties of each place. The Department is looking for ways to research and propose policy mechanisms so that public hospitals can be more sustainably autonomous.
