Female patient NHA (21 years old, residing in Nam Dan district) was admitted to the Department of Urology, Vinh City General Hospital with dull pain in the left flank and prolonged painful urination.
After being thoroughly examined by specialists, the patient was assigned to perform specialized paraclinical tests including: Ultrasound, cystoscopy and 256-slice computed tomography (CT Scanner) of the urinary system. The results showed that the left ureter had prolapsed, forming a prolapsed sac located entirely within the bladder, containing ureteral stones. In particular, the diagnostic image also discovered that the patient had a complete left double kidney malformation - in which the upper pole ureter was the location of the prolapse. This is a rare congenital abnormality, especially in adults.

Faced with this complicated case, the team of the Department of Urology of Vinh City General Hospital had an online consultation with Dr. Chau Quy Thuan (Cho Ray Hospital) and decided to perform endoscopic surgery through the urethra. The intervention technique includes: cutting the prolapsed sac, reconstructing the ureteral orifice with a bipolar knife and lithotripsy with a Holmium laser - a modern, minimally invasive method but bringing optimal treatment results.
The surgery went smoothly within 40 minutes, with minimal blood loss. The prolapsed sac was completely removed, the urinary tract was re-established, and the ureteral stones were completely crushed. After surgery, the patient recovered quickly: He was alert immediately after surgery, urinated normally, no more pain in the lower back, and was discharged after only 3 days.
Dr. Tran Duc Trong - Head of General Surgery Department said: “Ureteral prolapse is a rare malformation, especially when accompanied by double kidneys and urinary stones. If not detected and treated promptly, the disease can cause dangerous complications such as recurrent urinary tract infections and kidney function damage. Successful treatment requires close coordination between the treatment team and modern equipment systems such as bipolar electric knives and Holmium lasers”.
The success of the surgery not only helps the patient escape the risk of complications but also demonstrates the increasingly solid professional capacity of the team of Urologists at Vinh City General Hospital in approaching and treating complex urological diseases right at the grassroots level./.
