Previously, on June 12, Hue Central Hospital received information about coordinating tissues and organs from a brain-dead donor from the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation.
Given the urgency and value of the donated organs, the Hospital Board of Directors convened an urgent meeting and mobilized the team of doctors to perform the organ retrieval work to immediately go to Ho Chi Minh City, coordinate with Thong Nhat Hospital and 108 Central Military Hospital to perform the heart, liver and cornea retrieval.
Thanks to effective coordination, the process of organ retrieval and preservation was shortened. All tissues and organs were brought to Hue on the evening of June 13. Immediately after arriving in Hue, the transplant teams urgently performed surgeries at night to save the lives of patients in critical condition.
The heart was transplanted to a patient with end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy, who was very poorly responsive to medical treatment with very low left ventricular function LVEF 17-21%; the patient had suffered multiple cardiac arrests, threatening his life. The heart started beating again in the recipient's chest at 0:35 on June 14 after 5:30 hours of cold ischemia with 3 types of medium-dose cardiac support drugs and 66 minutes of extracorporeal circulatory support.

The right liver was transplanted to a patient born in 2009, suffering from congenital biliary atresia, who underwent Kasai surgery at 2 months of age and was regularly monitored and treated at Hue Central Hospital, secondary biliary cirrhosis with MELD score >30, recurrent biliary tract infection 1-2 times/year, had to undergo 5 ligations of esophageal varices, and had a very fragile life. The liver was reperfused at 01:53 on June 14, after completing the hepatic veins, portal vein, and hepatic artery with a cold ischemia time of 6 hours and 45 minutes.
After surgery, the two heart and liver transplant patients were transferred to the recovery room. By 9:00 p.m. the same day, the two patients were fully conscious, hemodynamically stable, with hematological and biochemical tests within acceptable limits, and were taken off the ventilator at 9:00 p.m. on June 14.
Currently, after 6 days of surgery, the liver transplant patient has good graft function, has resumed eating and light movement. No abnormalities have been recorded in the clinical progression.
After 6 days of surgery, the liver transplant patient had good graft function, was able to eat again and move around lightly.
In addition, two patients with corneal dystrophy, including one who had been living in complete darkness, received donated corneas. Each procedure took about an hour, with the surgeon removing the diseased cornea, replacing it with a donor cornea, and stitching it back together with tiny stitches.
After surgery, vision gradually recovered, the patient was monitored and regularly used anti-rejection drugs.
This is a priceless gift, bringing light, hope and a new life from the benevolent heart of the donor.
Doctors performed a corneal transplant on the patient.
Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, who directly directed and coordinated the transplants, shared: Behind the success of each transplant are countless silent efforts from the close coordination and urgent support between the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and hospitals and coordinating units; the efforts of the doctors, racing against time every hour and minute to achieve solid professional qualifications, mastering sophisticated organ transplant techniques and the smooth, responsible inter-disciplinary coordination throughout the hospital.
What is more noble than all is the silent and humane sacrifice of organ donors and their relatives. In the most painful moment of loss, they chose to give their lives - a sacred act, contributing to the journey of miraculous recovery for patients who are fighting against diseases every day, every hour, life is as fragile as a candle in the wind.
