Timely first aid determines survival

On June 10, Bach Mai Hospital ( Hanoi ) informed about a number of cases of timely first aid in the community that helped patients overcome critical conditions and reduce complications after accidents.

The first case is Mr. P. (in Thai Nguyen ). On the morning of the accident, he saw many dead koi fish floating in the pond, so he went down to check and they sank to the bottom of the pond.

His wife stood on the shore and witnessed the whole incident. She suspected that there was a problem with the fish tank, so she called for help. About 2 minutes after Mr. P. sank into the fish tank, he was brought to shore by everyone.

About 4 minutes after falling into the fish pond and suffering cardiac arrest due to electric shock, a neighbor began performing continuous chest compressions while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

Upon admission to Thai Nguyen General Hospital, Mr. P. had a pulse, a heartbeat, and was breathing again. The patient was intubated and transferred to Bach Mai Hospital to check for other injuries. He was discharged, healthy and normal after a short time.

Previously, a 5-year-old boy (Hanoi) played with his pants' drawstring and "hanged" himself in the air. When his family discovered him, he was purple and had difficulty breathing.

The father quickly helped the child down, gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and performed chest compressions for 5 minutes. The child began breathing on his own, his lips turned pink and he was taken to the emergency room. After 5 days in the hospital, the child was completely conscious. The results of the heart, lungs, brain MRI, and cervical spine scan showed no abnormalities.

In addition, there was a 19-month-old child (Thai Nguyen) who drowned after falling into a bucket of water. When the family discovered it, the child was cyanotic and had stopped breathing. Luckily, the family members had first aid knowledge as soon as they took the child out of the bucket of water. After about 5-7 minutes of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the child vomited water and food and began breathing again, although still in a coma.

According to Bach Mai Hospital, the above cases were saved thanks to timely and proper first aid before being admitted to the hospital. Timely first aid is a decisive factor in the survival rate, minimizing sequelae and death of the victims before reaching medical staff and facilities.

Basic first aid methods

According to doctors at the A9 Emergency Center of Bach Mai Hospital, "if first aid is performed correctly within the first 5 minutes, the chance of survival of a patient with cardiac arrest can increase 2-3 times...".

Cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest (CPR)

Steps: "Check - call for help - CPR". Shake and pat the patient's shoulder. Observe breathing (for 5-10 seconds). Call for help and emergency help. Place the patient on his back on a hard, flat surface. Perform CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation continuously until an ambulance arrives or the patient starts breathing again.

Foreign body in airway

Just a few minutes of delay can cause severe brain damage or death. First aid involves performing the Heimlich maneuver - hugging from behind, placing your hands under the sternum and pressing up quickly to dislodge the object.

Treatment of burns and bleeding wounds

Thermal burns: "Cool - cover - get to the hospital". Soak or rinse the burn area with clean, cool water (do not use ice) for at least 15-20 minutes. Cover the burn with a clean cloth or sterile gauze. Get to a medical facility immediately if the burn is extensive or deep.

Bleeding: "Press - elevate - bandage". Use gauze or clean cloth to press directly on the wound. Elevate the bleeding area (if possible). Apply pressure firmly and take the patient to the nearest medical facility if bleeding is heavy.

Drowning treatment

"Pull up - check - CPR now". Get the victim out of the water as quickly as possible. Lay the patient on a flat surface, check consciousness and breathing. If breathing/cardiac arrest occurs, immediately perform CPR (30 compressions, 2 breaths) continuously until they regain consciousness or an ambulance arrives.
