BTO-The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has coordinated with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to organize the conference "Sustainable dragon fruit development in Vietnam", held in Ho Chi Minh City last weekend.
This conference was held within the framework of the project “Promoting private investment in low-carbon agriculture and climate change response, contributing to Vietnam’s climate change response”, with the participation of relevant ministries, branches, localities, international organizations and a large number of dragon fruit enterprises and cooperatives across the country. The delegation of Binh Thuan province attended the conference led by Mr. Phan Van Tan - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province, along with a number of affiliated units, enterprises, cooperatives producing, processing and exporting dragon fruit in the province.
The conference aims to share orientations for the development of Vietnamese dragon fruit and promote the production, processing and consumption of green, sustainable dragon fruit products. At the same time, discuss mechanisms and solutions for developing domestic and export markets for dragon fruit products. At the same time, create opportunities to promote chain linkages between producers, cooperatives, enterprises, processing and exporting facilities towards low carbon emissions, sustainability and adaptation to climate change.
At the conference, the Department of Crop Production introduced an overview of dragon fruit production in Vietnam, China and some other countries. Specifically, it emphasized that the current area of dragon fruit in Vietnam is nearly 55,000 hectares, with an output of about 1.3 million tons/year. However, after a period of dominating a number of markets, Vietnamese dragon fruit is facing many challenges. That is, the requirements for quality, food safety, and appearance of fresh dragon fruit for export are increasingly strict. The main variety of Vietnam is red-skinned, white-fleshed dragon fruit, which has a beautiful and impressive size and appearance, but a bland taste, not as crispy and sweet as yellow-skinned dragon fruit. In addition, the impact of climate change leads to the emergence and development of many types of pests and diseases, along with the high price of fertilizers, affecting production investment, costs, food safety and competitiveness...
In Binh Thuan alone, Mr. Phan Van Tan said that the whole province currently has nearly 28,000 hectares of dragon fruit, with more than 500 cooperative groups with nearly 10,000 households; 35 cooperatives and 1 Cooperative Union with an area of 1,384 hectares and 673 members. Currently, the consumption of dragon fruit products is unstable, prices are still uncertain; competitiveness is still weak, the consumption market is not diverse, mainly the Chinese market...
Presenting solutions for sustainable dragon fruit development in Vietnam, the UNDP representative in Vietnam said that Vietnam needs to focus on the quality of dragon fruit rather than output and quantity. Accordingly, it is necessary to maintain a concentrated production level in localities such as Binh Thuan, Long An , Tien Giang to be able to apply farming measures that meet Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) standards, integrating standards on quality, safety, environmental protection and adaptation to climate change...
Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized that if dragon fruit is to develop sustainably, it is necessary to implement safe production processes, reduce emissions, and at the same time improve the quality and value of the product. The inevitable requirement is to reorganize dragon fruit production according to the chain link because even if there are good varieties and good fruits, but the organization is not good, it will not be effective and will not bring added value. In the production link, the role of cooperatives, farmers, and enterprises needs to be specifically defined and committed to ensure the final product is of the best quality...
Previously, on September 22 in Phan Thiet City, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan coordinated with the Vietnam Gardening Association to organize the Forum "Finding solutions for sustainable development of the Vietnamese dragon fruit industry", attracting the participation of representatives of relevant ministries, branches, localities, enterprises and cooperatives.
