In November 2023, Tang Wenju and Chen Xiangyu posted a video of themselves teaching their son using ChatGPT artificial intelligence technology on Douyin. The video went viral on social media, attracting millions of views after China Central Television (CCTV) interviewed the couple about raising children with AI.

The father, surnamed Chen, is a PhD candidate in data science at Tsinghua University. The mother, surnamed Tang, is a linguistics teacher at Hubei University in Wuhan and holds a PhD from Peking University.

Their son, Twelve, 5, once fell off the playground while riding his scooter and was laughed at by other parents present. The boy was very upset by the laughter, despite his parents' every attempt to comfort him. Seeing that his son was still upset, Chen decided to use ChatGPT.

ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, is a conversational bot that can understand complex questions and provide human-like responses. ChatGPT is set to launch in 2022 and enable chat in November 2023.

“Listen to what the robot says,” Chen told his son. He then asked the robot on his phone, “My 5-year-old son accidentally fell off his bike and the other parents laughed at him. Was their behavior right or wrong?”

A female voice immediately replied: “A 5-year-old child falling is already worrying, being laughed at must be even more troublesome. The behavior of those who laughed at him is inappropriate.”

Meanwhile, Tang realized that the best way to comfort someone is to be their ally. She instructed ChatGPT to stand in her son's shoes and criticize those who laughed at him.

ChatGPT then followed Tang's instructions and began to comfort the boy: “How could they treat a child like that? It's so upsetting to see something like this happen. They should know what they did was completely wrong. It's unsympathetic of them to laugh at a child who fell down. Twelve deserves a better response.”

After hearing the words of encouragement, Twelve was immediately convinced by ChatGPT's "objective perspective".

Tang said she was initially skeptical about artificial intelligence, but after her husband introduced ChatGPT to her, she was drawn to its “magic.” ChatGPT has now become a “family member” of theirs, providing emotional comfort while also helping the couple with their work and raising their children.

On the social media platform Xiaohongshu, scores of other parents have shared their experiences of raising children with AI.

The mother of a primary school boy in Anhui Province, China, said she sought help from an AI chatbot whenever her son asked something she couldn't answer.

Another mother with two primary school-age sons living in Beijing also said she used AI to create cartoons from her older son's stories to encourage him to be more creative.
