Selfishness and disrespect are very individual.
In recent days, social media has been spreading a video clip of two young people yelling at veterans while waiting in line to watch the parade celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification.
That behavior has caused outrage in the community, because it goes against national cultural traditions, especially on a sacred occasion like April 30. In this group of young people, there is a young man who is said to be a student at Van Lang University.
Many people think that the group of young people had behaved disrespectfully towards adults and should be condemned. |
Immediately after the incident, Van Lang University spoke up, saying that it had received many reports about the incident and had held an urgent meeting. At the same time, the school was also coordinating with the Faculty and the student affairs department to promptly verify and handle the incident in accordance with the regulations of the Student Affairs Regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training .
“The school does not agree with the substandard behavior of an individual student, which negatively affects the overall positive image of the student community and does not represent Van Lang University.”

While public opinion is still outraged, an apology post appeared that was "scrutinized" by the online community and found to be 80% written by AI. Many people wondered whether this was the original post or a fake account created to appease or distract public opinion?
Although public opinion is indignant, if we look back at recent events, a few thoughtless phenomena in speech and action are only very isolated compared to the mainstream emotions of the whole society, which are still pride, respect, gratitude towards the previous generation, inspiration and spirit of solidarity, and sacred strength that is strongly aroused. Those one or two isolated, out-of-place voices are not worth our attention and discussion compared to the heroic, sacred triumphal song that is rising throughout the country.
It is small, individual, representing no one, nothing, like the buzzing of mosquitoes that no one notices when a majestic orchestra is playing!
50th Anniversary Further Fuels Young People's Ideals and Gratitude

The incident of the Van Lang University student is just an isolated phenomenon, not representative of the thinking of the entire young generation, just like “a small worm in a weed” not enough to “sour the barrel”. We should not judge an entire generation by an individual mistake. Instead, let’s look at the incident as a common lesson for schools, families and society to work together to cultivate a young generation that is knowledgeable, compassionate and has national pride.
Because, in the same ceremony that day, many young people who are students, young soldiers showed kindness and respect to the veterans. Moreover, the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the complete liberation of Vietnam and the reunification of the country this time is the catalyst, the vivid practical lesson, the most sacred and valuable historical and moral lesson "once in half a century" that ignites the fire of ideals of life, the ethics of gratitude, the reason to live for the community, the responsibility to the nation, the love for the country... in every young person. Never in many years have we seen the image of so many young people with the same national color, singing revolutionary songs, following the marching steps and proudly feeling "peace is so beautiful!" like recently. Never before have we seen so many young people proactively giving up their good seats, shaded from the sun, fetched water, helped veterans and the elderly from the parking lot to the stands... as much as this. Never before have newspapers and social media been so bright with the red color of status lines, articles of gratitude and pride. And who are the ones who multiply these simple patriotic and proud trends? They are still the young people. Never in the past 50 years has our Fatherland been so beautiful with a newer, stronger and purer beauty, right from the hearts of young Vietnamese, with a love for the Fatherland that is "absolutely Gen Z", "absolutely realistic", "absolutely not... cinematic" like this!
Let us forget the lonely voice complaining about traffic jams or the petty nonsense of that student and remember the image of the students quietly standing behind, giving the honorable position to the veterans, which moved many people. That is the typical portrait of today's youth, living with morality, grateful for the past and respecting history.
Those events are worth criticizing but not worth worrying about much, although moraleducation , gratitude and public behavior are still things that cannot be overlooked. But at the same time, this is also an opportunity for us to see the positive side that most of the young generation still carries within them a sense of responsibility, compassion and national pride. The historic ceremony is a measure of our faith in the next generation, the future generation when the green of youth will forever continue with the color of the national flag!
Never in the past years have we seen images of young people in large numbers with the same national color, singing revolutionary songs, following the marching steps and proudly feeling "peace is so beautiful!" like recently. Never before have we seen so many young people proactively giving up good seats, shade from the sun, fetching water, helping veterans and the elderly from the parking lot to the stands... as much as this.
