A designer named Tuong Danh has just introduced a collection called "New Traditional". According to him, his collection is inspired by the beauty of traditional Vietnamese costumes, but is created to add a modern, fresh feel.

However, the collection sparked mixed public opinion with the image of a model wearing a conical hat and a stylized yếm shirt, revealing her back and butt.

Another design that caused outrage was a yellow off-the-shoulder dress with a high neckline worn by a male model. While performing, this person also held a golden bell in his hand.

Along with that, many other designs inspired by ao dai and ao yem also have bold cut-out details.

This collection also faced fierce opposition from experts. Artist and Ao Dai researcher Nguyen Duc Binh shared with VTC News reporter: " The person who made this costume does not understand the traditional theme and cultural identity. This costume does not carry the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people.

While the cultural identity of Vietnamese costumes is discreet, modest, and simple, many designers today use words like inspiration, modern breath, and the voice of the times we live in to create inappropriate and ridiculous costumes.

They are mistaken, how can there be such inspiration? Whether the costumes are modernized or not, they still have to exude Vietnamese cultural identity."

Mr. Nguyen Duc Binh added: "If these costumes are performed in a private space, on a small scale, without affecting the public, then introducing them is the designer's job. But when they are widely announced outside, they will affect the community, the aesthetic orientation of society. Young people will think that it is the identity of Vietnamese culture. This is very dangerous.

This incident also raises questions about the management of the authorities. If phenomena like this continue, it will distort Vietnamese culture. In my opinion, this is cultural degeneration, not just a rupture."

Ton That Minh Khoi, the director of the historical project Thien Nam Lich Dai Hau Phi, criticized: "Since when has the traditional conical hat been associated with such vulgar, bare buttocks? I can't believe my eyes when I see these images!

Since when has the image of monks begging for alms, which is an extremely sacred image, reminiscent of the original Sangha, been distorted so horribly on the catwalk? All from a brand that pretends to be "traditional Vietnamese costumes", the indignation has reached its peak. Don't, don't ever use the excuse of "innovation" and "creativity" to brutally rape and kill traditional culture like this! I strongly condemn and oppose this collection and brand!".

Meanwhile, the public was also dissatisfied with this collection. One viewer commented: "Wanting to bring traditional themes into the design but not caring about the values and images of Vietnamese people for generations. The image of traditional Vietnamese women is extremely beautiful and has its own charm. No matter how you want to innovate, you must still maintain the core of tradition."

Other viewers criticized more harshly: "As for the yếm, even though it is underwear, it is still a symbol of women, a symbol of softness, grace and elegance, not ridiculous enough to be paired with thongs and high heels like a stripper."

Besides, many audiences also think that the collection is not special in terms of materials or colors, even showing carelessness and sloppiness in the creative process: " The materials are not special, the colors are not impressive, and the design has nothing new"; "The way the content is expressed on the fabric is not good, too careless and sloppy, leading to it looking too vulgar.
