Attending and speaking at the congress, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan stated that cardiology is one of the most dynamically developing fields in medicine in the world. Cardiologists in Southeast Asia are also very dynamic, closely connected and have professional skills approaching those of developed countries.
Vietnam’s cardiology sector has also made great strides in recent years with many proud results when many dangerous cardiovascular diseases have been effectively treated. Many advanced and high-tech treatment methods have been applied not only at central hospitals but also at lower-level hospitals. Cardiovascular patients in Vietnam have benefited from scientific advances and no longer need to go abroad for treatment.
However, the Minister of Health also frankly pointed out that currently, the disease model has changed a lot, in which non-communicable diseases continue to grow strongly, especially cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases have become the leading cause of death globally with 19.5 million deaths each year. Moreover, the mortality rate due to cardiovascular diseases is increasing in low-income and low-middle income countries, accounting for up to 75%.
In Vietnam, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health, each year about 200,000 people die from cardiovascular diseases, accounting for 39.5% of total deaths. Meanwhile, risk factors related to the environment, climate change, sedentary habits, overweight, obesity, etc. are still on the rise and pose major challenges to cardiovascular disease prevention.
The Southeast Asian Congress of Cardiology has attracted many cardiovascular experts in the region and the world. |
To control cardiovascular diseases, the Minister of Health requested the Vietnam Cardiology Association and functional units of the Ministry of Health and the Departments of Health of provinces and cities to promote the program of preventing non-communicable diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. At the same time, unify the model of cardiovascular disease management from the commune, district, provincial and central levels to plan a synchronous development of a specialized cardiovascular network.
