Vietnam men's volleyball team disappointed when losing to Philippines - Photo: AVC
Returning from an impressive run at the AVC Nations Cup, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team was expected to play well in the SEA V.League. However, they had a disappointing day.
The players appeared to be stuck, unable to attack effectively and defending awkwardly. Coach Tran Dinh Tien also failed to make effective tactical adjustments.
Right from the start, the whole team showed their long-standing weaknesses in the first step and blocking. Even experienced main attackers like Ngoc Thuan and Quan Trong Nghia did not have a good feel for the Philippines' serving situations.
The blockers still misjudged and let many situations slip through. This helped the young Philippine setter Ordiales maximize his diverse scoring ability.
And there was another problem that was unexpectedly revealed in this match, which was the serving. Right in the first set, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team had at least 5 failed serves, giving points to the opponent. They lost this set with a score difference of 17-25.
In the second set, coach Tran Dinh Tien replaced Quoc Duy with Van Hiep, which surprised the Philippines. Thanks to that, the Vietnamese team created a significant gap of 7-3. However, after a technical consultation when leading 8-5, they slowed down and continued to make mistakes.
Therefore, despite trying to stick around and create a thrilling chase, the Vietnamese team still lost 23-25. In set 3, the team's moves were still too predictable, and the opponent figured them out. The 19-25 loss left the Vietnamese men's volleyball team "empty-handed" on the opening day of the SEA V.League.
This result also brings back the nightmare of losing both legs last year. Coach Tran Dinh Tien's team needs to quickly regain their spirit and prepare carefully for the match against Cambodia on July 10.
If they continue to lose, the chance of having at least 1 win in stage 1 is almost gone as they will have to face two very strong teams, Thailand and Indonesia, in the final matches.
