Vietnam Women's Volleyball: Sowing Hope to Change Southeast Asia's Number 1 Position

Losing 2-3 to Thailand in the "final" match of the first round of SEA V-League, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team has great confidence that they will get revenge on their opponents in the second round taking place at home, and further in the SEA Games.

First time winning 2 sets against Thailand on away field

Bich Tuyen's failed serve brought Thailand 15 points in the 5th set, the "final" match of the first leg of SEA V-League 2025. The 2000-born setter held her head in regret because if she had had 1 more point, she and her teammates would have had a chance to come back against the home team.

In this match, Bich Tuyen was one of the top scorers for the Vietnamese women's volleyball team , but frankly speaking, she also made quite a few mistakes when she lost her temper.

Although they did not have the strongest lineup without their main hitter Chatchuon due to injury, Thailand was the team that played with more courage and knew how to exploit the opponent's weaknesses. Not only did they lock down Thanh Thuy, the girls from the Land of the Golden Pagoda also organized very well to block Bich Tuyen 's smashes .

Being "taken care of" carefully by the Thai athlete, the Vietnamese setter played hastily, often using smashes behind the 3m line but did not create any danger, and was even easily neutralized.

Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet made changes to his players and playing style, along with a very determined fighting spirit, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team won 2 sets against Thailand. This is also the first time in history that Vietnamese women's volleyball team won 2 sets against Thailand on away field.

But that was the best the Vietnamese women's volleyball team could do. Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team did not have an effective and surprising second plan.

The attacks from the position of the VTV Cup 2025 runner-up's middle blocker were not enough to cause trouble for the Thai defense, even though after the final match Bich Thuy was voted the best middle blocker.

Debt collection at home

“Thailand did not win this match beautifully. We lost points because of VAR and the referee at key moments. However, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team also had problems with the second set, leading to an unfortunate loss.

Although we lost, we were not disappointed. On the contrary, the athletes tried very hard and won 2 sets against Thailand. In 5 days, the second round will take place at home, and then the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will get revenge on Thailand," said coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet.

"The Vietnamese women's volleyball team will beat Thailand at home. I guarantee that," Mr. Kiet emphasized.

In addition to the 2 historic wins against Thailand, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team was recognized by the Organizing Committee with the most outstanding individual titles. Accordingly, in addition to Bich Thuy as the excellent middle blocker, Khanh Dang as the excellent Libero, Bich Tuyen also received this title in the opposite position. Thus, the team of coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet has 3 individual titles in stage 1.

Regarding the team's playing style, despite losing, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team made Thailand sweat to win after 5 sets. The home team even received favor from the referee in sensitive controversial situations.

The gap in skill level between the Vietnamese and Thai women's volleyball teams has never been as narrow as it is now. At times, the Vietnamese girls even surpassed the regional "big sister".

At home, in addition to learning from the first round, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team also received great support from fans. This is the basis for coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his students to believe in a historic victory over the Thais in the warm-up tournament for the 33rd SEA Games with the goal of winning the gold medal.
