WHAT DO THE NEW HEAD COACH AND YOUNG ATHLETES SAY?
Since early October 2023, the coaching staff of the national youth table tennis team has been replaced, the head coach has been dismissed and the entire team has been withdrawn to the Hanoi National Sports Training Center (abbreviated as the center).
The meals of the national youth table tennis team's athletes are much more nutritious.
According to Thanh Nien 's investigation, since moving to the center, the meals of the young table tennis team's athletes have become more nutritious and diverse. For example, the team's menu on October 23 included: beef noodles, canned milk, eggs (breakfast, VND50,000/person); beef stew with potatoes, grilled pork ribs, grass carp with tomato sauce, fried pork belly, white radish stir-fried with eggs, boiled cabbage stems, fish and cucumber soup, yogurt, guava (lunch, VND125,000/person); soft roasted duck, steamed snakehead fish, roasted pork belly, fried shrimp, sweet potatoes with cheese, stir-fried chayote shoots with garlic, bamboo shoot soup, yogurt, watermelon (dinner, VND125,000/person). On October 26, breakfast included fish noodles, canned milk, cakes; Lunch consists of 10 dishes, including savory dishes such as steamed shrimp, steamed snakehead fish with five willows, roast pork, grilled chicken thighs, tofu stuffed with meat sauce, boiled cabbage stems, chicken soup with potatoes and carrots...; dinner consists of 9 dishes, the menu is also completely changed. According to state regulations, each athlete receives 320,000 VND for food/day, including 300,000 VND/day for 3 meals, and the remaining 20,000 VND/day, after the teams request, will be transferred directly to the athlete's account to buy drinks.
The menu is announced publicly every day.
The Vietnamese youth table tennis team has 10 athletes (because 1 player is competing in a tournament and is not at the center, so there are 9 left), divided equally into 2 trays with the above-mentioned food rations. Sharing with Thanh Nien on October 26, an athlete of the team confirmed that the meals were delicious, nutritious, and the conditions for training, living and competing were good.
Taking over the Vietnam youth table tennis team from Mr. Bui Xuan Ha, head coach Vu Van Trung said: "Since I took over the team, the eating, living and moving of the young athletes have been well ensured by the center. In particular, the current nutritional regimen has met the training and competition intensity of young table tennis athletes. After the incident, the team has received more attention, the training efficiency and spirit of the athletes in the past 2 weeks, in my opinion, have increased significantly."
TIGHTEN MANAGEMENT
Currently, Vietnam sports has 46 teams in many sports, but the center only ensures accommodation and food for about half of the teams (24 teams), the rest must arrange for athletes from 22 teams to practice and live outside the center. The Vietnam youth table tennis team is arranged to practice at the My Dinh National Sports Complex (complex). The first responsibility belongs to the head coach. However, Mr. Bui Xuan Ha did not comply with the regulations clearly stated in the document: for teams training outside the center, the head coach must be responsible to the center for managing athletes, organizing and implementing the food and accommodation regime to ensure compliance with regulations; is the person who orders and manages meals according to the correct portion, and is transparent in finance.

In a recent meeting, Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet requested to review the responsibilities of the Training and Political Affairs Department of the center, the Department of High Performance Sports (Department of Sports and Physical Training) and the complex. In the near future, the center will propose to the industry leaders to issue additional coordination regulations between relevant units, because currently there are still many teams training outside the center, especially it will be necessary to enhance the supervisory role of each side, to avoid incidents like the one that just happened to the national youth table tennis team.
More importantly, at the core of the whole issue, is that the competent authorities need to review the level of investment in the sports industry, including investment in upgrading facilities at the center. When the center has enough spacious and modern facilities, all teams will be able to practice at a single location, without having to go outside to train. Only then can professional efficiency be ensured as well as good care for the athletes' lives.
