As a person with more than decades of experience growing red grapefruit for the king, Mr. Nguyen Van Tu in Luan Van village, Tho Xuong commune, Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province said that this year due to hot weather and prolonged storms, the grapefruit area bearing fruit is less, leading to a significant decrease in grapefruit output compared to previous years.
"My family's grapefruit garden has more than 500 trees, each year generating an income of about 500 million VND. This year, the grapefruits have few fruits and many have fallen, so the grapefruits serving the Tet market will be less than every year, but in return, the fruit is more beautiful and the price is higher than every year," said Mr. Tu.
According to the People's Committee of Tho Xuong commune, 80% of households in the commune currently grow this type of grapefruit. Small households grow about 20 trees, while large households grow thousands of trees.
According to Mr. Tu's family's experience in growing grapefruit, Luan Van grapefruit is not like other grapefruit varieties, because it must be planted from the 5th year onwards to give a stable harvest.
When young, the pomelo has a green skin like other pomelos, but around the 7th and 8th lunar months, the pomelo will turn yellow, and by the end of November, the pomelo will start to turn red. When the pomelo is ripe, the entire pomelo, from the skin to the flesh, will turn red.

At the royal red grapefruit farm of Mr. Pham Van Thanh's family, Thu Trinh village, Luan Van commune, Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province, the grapefruit yield this year is low, and there are fewer beautiful standard products than in previous years.
In addition, red grapefruit ripens from around the 10th lunar month. Due to the erratic weather in the last month of the year, grapefruit ripens very quickly and falls easily, making it difficult to preserve until Tet.
"My family's garden has 300 grapefruit trees, this year we harvested about 3,000 - 4,000 fruits. The amount of grapefruit supplied to the market is not enough, so the price of grapefruit may continue to fluctuate near Tet," Mr. Thanh shared.
