The highlight of the counseling session was the series of pointed questions from four students about language studies. Bao Tran, a 12th-grade student from Tran Van Thoi High School, asked: "Nowadays, students can study English at centers and get certificates, so is it a waste of time to abandon nearly four years of studying for a Bachelor's degree in English?"
My Thuong wondered: Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace human translators? Two other students continued to question whether the increasing number of people who know English will lead to saturation in English language learning? And how does English language teaching today differ from English language teaching?
Dr. Pham Tan Ha, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), believes that developing linguistic aptitude is not simple. Language is a training process that takes 4-10 years or even longer.
During this process, learners not only acquire listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, but also gain in-depth knowledge of word and sentence structure, translation, interpretation, and teaching skills.
You will also need to know about the literature, art, and culture of the country whose language you are studying. This is something that language centers or certificate programs cannot provide; it should be a university program. "Many candidates already have IELTS scores of 7.5 or 8.0 but still choose to study a Bachelor of English because a university program gives you values that a certificate cannot," Mr. Ha said.
Dr. Pham Tan Ha further noted that a student who is good at foreign languages should also be good at... Vietnamese. Currently, many students are very good at translating from Vietnamese to English, but they encounter problems when translating from English to Vietnamese. They don't know which Vietnamese words to use appropriately.
Regarding AI, Mr. Ha advised candidates to rest assured because AI cannot yet replace humans. AI cannot understand the psychology, emotions, and context of a conversation, and only humans can translate accurately.
This morning, March 17th, the college admissions and career guidance program will continue its outreach to students in Bac Lieu province. The program will take place on the campus of Bac Lieu High School (Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Ward 5, Bac Lieu City).
