A senior German official said the remaining six G7 members have opposed the Trump administration's plans to raise tariffs, arguing that prolonging trade tensions would weaken the G7's own economies .

Speaking to reporters, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would coordinate with the leaders of France and Italy to discuss directly with President Trump about the impacts on trade.

The trade issue is also of particular concern to G7 host Canada after the US government announced additional tariffs on goods from its neighbor in recent months, causing much uncertainty for Canada's economic outlook.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with President Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit. A statement from the Canadian government after the meeting said the two countries are aiming to reach a trade agreement within the next 30 days.

Among the G7 countries, Britain was the first to sign a preliminary deal with the US in May, thereby avoiding higher tariffs.

On the sidelines of the G7 conference, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also met with President Trump to agree on the final points as well as the two sides signing an official agreement.

Meanwhile, President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized that tariffs are the ultimate burden that consumers and businesses have to bear.

Speaking on social network X after a private meeting with President Trump, Ms Von der Leyen said the two sides had instructed negotiating teams to "speed up progress to reach a fair agreement."

Many countries are still negotiating with the US to avoid new tariffs, which are expected to take effect from July 9 after the 90-day suspension expires./.
