Meta’s senior management team is feeling the heat from Mark Zuckerberg’s streamlining policy. Facebook’s parent company is looking to further reduce the number of vice presidents, according to Insider’s sources.

Meta’s CEO insists that the “year of efficiency” —a policy that led to the departure of more than 20,000 employees—has become a permanent part of how the company operates. Even executives are not immune to the strict evaluation standards and restructuring efforts.

Insider sources revealed that the number of Meta Vice Presidents peaked in 2023 with around 300 individuals holding the position. In previous years, the number was around 180.

While some left last year in the second wave of layoffs, Zuckerberg is reportedly not stopping there and wants to bring the total number of Meta VPs down to around 250. There are currently five levels of VP at Meta. The overall goal, according to the source, is to reduce the number of mid- and senior-level employees and increase the number of junior ones.

A Meta spokesperson declined to comment, but referred back to Zuckerberg's previous public comments about efficiency. In 2023, Meta's CEO said he didn't want a company where "managers manage managers" and that they had reduced some reporting structures.

VP ranks are being whittled down through “soft” mid-year performance reviews and formal performance reviews once a year, usually in the first quarter. VPs are subject to what’s known as “stack ranking,” a common process in the tech industry where peers are compared to see who is performing better. Their work and impact are closely monitored.

Additionally, Meta requires managers to classify 10% to 12.5% of their team as underperforming. These people are placed on a performance improvement plan (PIP). Typically, such reviews result in dismissal or demotion.
