Agribank staff quickly helps 88-year-old man escape fraud "trap"

With a high sense of vigilance and professional ingenuity, Agribank Phan Dinh Phung Branch staff have successfully prevented a fraudulent transaction, helping an 88-year-old man avoid losing 26 million VND unjustly.

On the morning of March 12, customer Mai Xuan T (88 years old, residing in Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City) came to make a transaction at Transaction Office 1 - Agribank Phan Dinh Phung Branch. As a regular customer at Transaction Office 1, when Mr. Mai Xuan T arrived, transaction officer Truong Thanh Nhi quickly recognized him.

But the difference is that instead of withdrawing only about 4 - 5 million VND like the previous times, this time Mr. T requested to transfer up to 26 million VND to Tran Thi Kim Sang's account at Asia Commercial Bank with very special content: "Mai Xuan T deposited money into DWGroup Corporation, a gold mining trading floor". In addition, this time Mr. T was accompanied by a strange woman about 40 years old. When hearing the transfer content, this person did not agree and asked Mr. T to withdraw cash and give it to her with the reason of saving fees.

Noticing unusual signs when the recipient account was a personal one, while the money transfer content was related to an organization, along with the urgent attitude of the woman accompanying Mr. T, transaction officer Truong Thanh Nhi cleverly warned the customer about signs of fraud. Along with that, Ms. Nhi also looked up information about DW Group Corporation and recorded the results that this is a multi-industry business group: baking powder, processed food, gasoline to metal jewelry... newly established on November 25, 2024. From this result, Ms. Nhi immediately reported the incident to the Transaction Office leader for timely handling.

To prolong the time, Ms. Nhi used the excuse that the customer's signature did not match and instructed the customer to call a family member to come to the bank to authorize the account to make the transaction. Thanks to that, Ms. Nhi delayed Mr. T's transaction time for more than 1 hour to wait for the family member to coordinate. However, due to the urging of the woman accompanying him, Mr. T left the bank with this person. Later, when Mr. T's family came to the bank to review the photos provided by the staff, they confirmed that they had no acquaintance with the woman accompanying Mr. T.

To prevent the strange woman from taking Mr. T to another transaction point to make the transaction, Phan Dinh Phung Branch instructed Ms. Nhi to inform neighboring transaction offices about the suspicious transaction. Not long after that, Mr. T's family directly returned to the bank to inform that Mr. T had returned home and that no loss had occurred, and at the same time expressed their gratitude to the bank staff for promptly preventing Mr. T's fraudulent behavior.

Mr. Mai Xuan T is one of many cases of customers who were lucky to escape the "trap" of scammers thanks to the cleverness and quick-wittedness of Agribank transaction officers. Most recently, on February 3, 2025, Agribank Thong Nong Branch (Ha Quang) also prevented a money transfer transaction for scammers, helping customers to preserve the amount of 25 million VND. Previously, many other cases were also successfully prevented at Agribank branches and transaction offices. Among them, there were many cases with the amount of fraud up to hundreds of millions of VND.

These cases show that the professional skills of bank staff are an important "block" to help protect customers' assets when they accidentally fall into the "trap" of scammers. Because in most cases, the victims are psychologically manipulated by the subjects, leading to a loss of vigilance.
