Early in the morning, Mr. Giang Seo Mang and his wife (San Chai commune, Si Ma Cai district, Lao Cai ) rented a car to take three buffaloes from Si Ma Cai district to the largest buffalo and cow market in the Northwest in Bac Ha town to sell.
These three buffaloes are Mr. Mang's entire fortune. Holding the buffaloes by one hand and stroking the head of the animal that has been with his family for the past year, Mr. Mang said that he bought these three buffaloes when they were still calves.
"I have sold two calves, but they were very cheap. One was 25 million VND, the other was 35 million VND. I only have this one left, I hope to sell it for 32-33 million VND and then buy another calf to raise," said Mr. Mang.

For a long time, Bac Ha buffalo market has been the largest "buffalo trading floor" in the Northwest, and also a place for exchange and trading of local people and traders. Previously, the market was held every Sunday, at the same time as Bac Ha market, but now the buffalo market has been moved to meet every Friday.

On the road on both sides of the river, about 1km from the center of Bac Ha town, hundreds of buffaloes and cows were brought by the locals and traders. Those living nearby led their buffaloes, those living far away hired trucks to transport them. Some people hoped to find good buffaloes at a good price, while others hoped their buffaloes and cows would fetch a good price.

Familiar with the meeting schedule of Bac Ha buffalo market, Mr. Vang A Phuong specializes in buying calves from all over to sell to people.
"Some people buy pairs of calves, some buy one. The price of buffalo and calves has been cheaper in recent years. Now a calf is only about 6.5-8 million VND. That price is almost half cheaper than before the COVID-19 pandemic," said A Phuong.

Some led their buffaloes upstream, others upstream. Some tied them to the tree trunk, some to the bridge railing… Everyone took advantage of the opportunity to sell and chat with each other.
Here, buffaloes are sold in all types, sizes, and ages. From calves to adult buffaloes, from meat buffaloes to sows…
Depending on the purpose of buying buffalo for meat, breeding or production, the way of looking and choosing is also different. Buffalo buyers often carefully look at details such as the legs, horns, claws, and appearance of the buffalo.
The purchase and sale is done quickly after bargaining and exchanging in cash. The price of buffalo at the market ranges from 18-40 million VND/adult buffalo. The price of calves ranges from 6.5-8 million VND/head.

From Hanoi to Bac Ha (Lao Cai) on a weekend business trip, Mr. Bao Nguyen took advantage of his free time on Friday morning to try the Bac Ha buffalo market.
"This morning, while sitting at a coffee shop by the roadside, I saw many people leading buffaloes by. When I asked, I found out that today was the meeting day of the Bac Ha buffalo market. When I got to the market, I realized that this was the first place I saw so many buffaloes. There were many impressive buffaloes with sturdy figures and big, strong horns.
Even if you don't have any need to buy buffalo, this market is worth experiencing when coming to Bac Ha town to better understand the culture of the people of the Northwest," Mr. Nguyen shared.
