As the Year of the Dragon 2024 is approaching, to welcome the Year of the Dragon, artisan Nguyen Tan Phat (Duong Lam ancient village, Son Tay, Hanoi ) has launched a collection of 1,000 works with dragon images. Among them, the most attention-grabbing is the gold-plated dragon-shaped chair.
Dragon chair shape.
The unique dragon-shaped chair is 1.65 meters high and 2 meters wide, made from lacquer on driftwood, plated with 24k gold. The entire body of the chair is inlaid with abalone shells, eggshells, etc. After covering it with 10 layers of color, to make the work more unique and different, Mr. Phat proceeded to plate it with silver, then burn the silver leaves to create deep black veins. Finally, a layer of 24k gold is applied.
About 2,500 gold leaves, equivalent to 500g of 24k gold, were used to cover this "unique" chair.
The author cleverly incorporated the image of a dragon (Ly Dynasty) with a strong Vietnamese character, combined with a set of 5 sturdy and strong claws, a dragon tail like a Bodhi leaf, and a undulating posture as if preparing to fly. From the time of coming up with the idea to completing the dragon chair, it took Mr. Phat about 2 years.
The lacquer details are sharp and meticulous on the surface of the chair.
According to Mr. Phat, the dragon is an image that holds a special place in the culture and beliefs of the Vietnamese people. The dragon is considered a sacred symbol, symbolizing strength, power, luck, and is also the leading sacred animal in the four sacred animals (Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle, Phoenix).
The dragon is also the inspiration for artisan Nguyen Tan Phat to launch a collection of 1,000 works to welcome the Year of the Dragon 2024 called "Dragon and Fairy's children", made from many materials such as wood, lacquer, ceramic, and metal.
“ The legend “Con Rong Chau Tien” talks about the origin of the Vietnamese people as descendants of dragons and fairies, the dragon refers to Lac Long Quan, the fairy refers to Au Co. This is also an image used in Vietnamese poetry with the meaning of expressing solidarity between ethnic groups in Vietnam ,” Mr. Phat analyzed.
In addition to the dragon chair valued at 2 billion VND by the author, 999 other works in the collection carry the meaning of descendants of the dragon and fairy, both for display and for sale to visitors in need at prices ranging from 5-15 million VND/product.

Previously, Mr. Phat also launched a collection of 1,010 lacquer buffalo statues, 2,000 lacquer tiger statues, and 2,023 lacquer cat statues to welcome the Lunar New Year 2021, Lunar New Year 2022, and Lunar New Year 2023.
