Huy Thanh, a 12th grade student living in Ben Luc district ( Long An province), said he wanted to study at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, but after looking for information, he found that the tuition fee was quite high, so he had to consider. “I have good academic performance, so I am very confident, but this year the school increased the tuition fee a lot. The lowest is Commercial Law with a tuition fee of more than 31 million VND/year. Some other majors have tuition fees ranging from about 37 - 74 million VND/year. For the Law major taught in English, the tuition fee is up to 165 million VND/year. Along with the costs of accommodation, travel, etc., it will cost a large amount to study. That is really a burden on my family's income, so I have to consider because if I do not maintain my contribution, it will affect my psychology when studying" - Thanh said. According to this candidate, currently the door to university is quite easy and candidates have many options. However, tuition fees, training quality, and jobs after graduation are things candidates must calculate and consider carefully.
However, not only Ho Chi Minh City University of Law but also many other universities in the Southern region will increase tuition fees from the 2024-2025 school year. Many schools have increased by tens of millions of VND each year, creating significant economic pressure for students, even beyond the ability of many families because the courses last an average of 4-5 years. Specifically, according to information from RMIT University, tuition fees for the 2024-2025 school year will increase by about 15 million VND/year compared to the previous school year. It is known that this is one of the universities with the highest tuition fees in Ho Chi Minh City. On average, each student has to pay nearly 1 billion VND for the entire course (about 4-5 years), depending on the different majors. In addition, some schools training in the Health sector (medicine, pharmacy) have also announced increased tuition fees compared to previous years, from the 2024-2025 school year.
This is the first school year that universities apply new tuition fees according to Decree 97 of the Government . According to some opinions, the increase in tuition fees is inevitable, but the increase to balance the training costs and the ability of the learners is the core issue. Because the increase in tuition fees will lead to the situation where candidates consider their choices, even change their learning needs because financial problems greatly affect the current learning process. That is the reason why, besides the fact that universities increase tuition fees sharply, many schools accept to keep it the same, or only increase "a little" to create favorable conditions for students.
Specifically, according to Mr. Phan Hong Hai - Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, the school plans to increase tuition fees in 2024 by only 5-10% compared to the old level to compensate for teaching and learning costs, increase staff salaries, etc. Previously, the school did not increase tuition fees for 3 consecutive years. Mr. Hai calculated that increasing tuition fees could be a "double-edged sword" because when it increases, the number of candidates will certainly decrease, leading to a change in total revenue. Balancing training costs and learners' abilities is the most important issue.
Similarly, Mr. Pham Tien Dat - Principal of the University of Finance - Marketing said that the school board has agreed not to increase tuition fees for the 2024 - 2025 school year for students currently studying at the school and only increase by 10% for new students enrolling from 2024. According to Mr. Dat, the school's tuition fees currently average about 19.5 million VND/year, so the 10% increase has been considered by the school to balance the interests of learners and the quality of training.
