Every school has its own rules that students, teachers, and staff must follow. Some schools have an additional code of conduct that outlines specific rules to help students develop and behave in a civilized, polite, and respectful manner.
Since the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, Truc Thuan Secondary School (Truc Ninh District, Nam Dinh ) has issued a notice on the code of cultural conduct of students in the school towards teachers, friends, and family. Accordingly, in Article 18 on behavior with friends, Chapter III of the Code of Conduct for Students, behavior with friends of the school states: Greeting and addressing friends must be intimate, open, and pure; no offensive, rude, teasing, or provocative behavior or words. Do not call each other or address each other with words reserved for respectful people such as grandparents and parents. Do not call friends by their parents' names or physical defects, or individual characteristics of their character. Do not call each other by movie or gangster words (big brother, senior sister, etc.). When visiting and helping friends, we must be sincere and tactful, not hide each other's shortcomings, and not avoid or look down on sick, disabled or disadvantaged people...
Many opinions expressed agreement with the school's promulgation of a model code of conduct for students to follow, and for teachers and staff to have a basis to guide and remind students to follow the prescribed content. Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Nam - Vice Principal of the Universityof Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) recognized the need to have a set of rules for addressing students in the school, helping the way of addressing both follow cultural standards and still create a comfortable, happy and friendly atmosphere between teachers and students, between friends and colleagues. In fact, there have been many incidents posted on social networks because of the unacceptable way of addressing students, the behavior of scolding students in class... by teachers. Teachers need standards, be role models for teaching students. Similarly, the behavior and form of address between students and students, students and teachers in the educational environment also need standards for students to follow.
However, according to the Chairman of the Hanoi Educational Psychology Association, Nguyen Tung Lam, it is also necessary to be flexible in each case instead of being rigid in making conclusions because nowadays there are many ways of addressing each other among students. Vietnamese is very rich with diverse personal pronouns, reflecting closeness and intimacy but can also be somewhat disrespectful if not used properly. Therefore, educating students about the rules of conduct and addressing is very important to help students develop in a civilized, polite, and respectful manner.
For many years, the Ministry of Education and Training has paid attention to school culture education and considered it an important factor contributing to building a progressive learning environment as well as shaping students' personalities. Since 2019, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued Circular No. 06 stipulating the Code of Conduct in preschools, general education institutions, and continuing education institutions to regulate the behavior of members in educational institutions according to social ethics and national customs, in accordance with local cultural characteristics and practical conditions of educational institutions; prevent and promptly and effectively handle negative and uneducated behaviors in educational institutions.
The Ministry also directed the implementation of the Program "Strengthening education on revolutionary ideals, ethics, lifestyle and arousing the desire to contribute to youth, teenagers and children" in conjunction with the roadmap for implementing the 2018 General Education Program. Through building a school culture, it helps ensure a safe, healthy, friendly educational environment and prevent and combat school violence - a concern not only for the education sector but also for the whole society today.
