On April 4, Vice Chairwoman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep signed a document to postpone the opening ceremony of the 12th Southern Traditional Cake Festival in 2025, which was scheduled to take place the same evening. The reason is that it is during the national mourning period for former Party Chairman and former President of Laos Khamtay Siphandone.
Can Tho City People's Committee requested the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the city to notify the leaders, central guests, provinces, centrally-run cities, Can Tho City, people, artisans, and tourists inside and outside the city.
At the same time, there is a document announcing the adjustment of the time to organize activities within the framework of the Southern Traditional Cake Festival after the end of two days of national mourning (April 4 and 5).
As planned, this year’s Southern Traditional Cake Festival will take place from April 4 to 8 at Binh Thuy District Square. The festival will be organized with 231 booths including traditional cake space (118 booths); regional specialty space (59 booths); culinary space (40 booths) with the participation of 18 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region and other localities nationwide.
In particular, there are two activities considered the "highlights" of the festival. The first is pouring a "super giant" banh xeo with a circumference of 9m with a filling of Muscovy duck meat, shrimp and especially 100 Nha Trang lobsters. This is the largest banh xeo ever and is larger than the giant banh xeo made at the Southern Traditional Cake Festival in 2024.
The second is to make the largest banh chung in the Mekong Delta to introduce to visitors. This cake is 1.9m x 1.9m in size, 0.8m thick, and was cooked by 20 artisans within 24 hours.
