>>> Be careful with the trend on social media: Drinking lemon juice to detoxify and cure all diseases?
Itching, rash, cough with phlegm after many days of drinking lemon water
On a group sharing experiences about drinking lemon juice to treat diseases, many members shared that they had symptoms such as itching, red rash all over the body, coughing up phlegm, and feeling tired like they had a cold. This made them wonder whether they should continue drinking lemon or stop. However, many people believe that this is a sign that the body is detoxifying, so they continue to drink it.
Doctor Le Thao Nguyen, Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, said that the above symptoms could be related to the abuse of lemon, especially when drinking too much on an empty stomach.
"When the body receives a large amount of citric acid from lemon continuously for many days, especially when there is no proper nutritional foundation, the digestive and immune systems can react. Rash, itchy skin, cough, body aches,... are inflammatory or irritating reactions that show the body is on alert," said Dr. Nguyen.
In addition, coughing with phlegm and body aches can also come from irritation of the stomach and esophagus lining. Drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach continuously can easily cause acid reflux, causing mild inflammation of the throat, dry cough or phlegm cough. Therefore, when there are prolonged signs such as itchy skin, hives, unexplained cough, especially if you have recently changed your eating habits, you need to stop immediately and go to a medical facility for examination. Do not continue on your own with the belief that "drinking for a long time will get you used to it".

Does drinking lemon water instead of breakfast help detox?
Drinking lemon water in the morning is a habit that many people believe in with the hope of supporting "detox", cleansing the body and helping to lose weight. Many people even fast completely and only drink lemon water instead of breakfast. However, according to Dr. Le Thao Nguyen, this is an unscientific method and has many potential health risks if abused or done incorrectly.
"Lemons contain a lot of citric acid. When taken on an empty stomach, especially in high doses and for many consecutive days, it can irritate the stomach lining. For people with a history of ulcers or sensitive stomachs, the risk of damage to the digestive tract is very high," Dr. Nguyen shared.
In addition, using lemon juice to completely replace breakfast also causes the body to lack energy after a long night, easily leading to fatigue, hypoglycemia, reduced learning and working performance, especially in people who do mental work or high-intensity exercise.
Lemons contain vitamin C, citric acid and some antioxidant compounds, however, improper use can cause side effects.

A common misconception is that lemon juice can "detoxify" or "cleanse" the body. According to Dr. Nguyen, this is unscientific as the body has a natural detoxification mechanism through the liver, kidneys and excretory system. There is no evidence that drinking large doses of lemon juice helps eliminate toxins as many people spread online. In addition, using lemons incorrectly, especially with increasing doses from 3 to 7 fruits per day as in the above case, can also cause digestive disorders, electrolyte imbalance, damage tooth enamel and affect the immune system, not to mention the risk of allergies or skin irritation due to acid.
Lemons contain vitamin C, citric acid and some antioxidant compounds, but their effects only help the body absorb iron, digest better or slightly stimulate metabolism, but do not "cleanse" the liver, blood or intestines as many viral contents on social networks.
"Detoxing by fasting and only drinking lemon water for a long time is counterproductive, because it puts the body in a state of lack of energy, nutritional imbalance, easily leading to dizziness, hypoglycemia, and prolonged digestive disorders. In fact, if you want to support liver function or digestion safely and effectively, the most correct way is to maintain a healthy diet rich in vegetables, drink enough water, get enough sleep and exercise regularly," Dr. Nguyen recommends.
