Compared to 2024, the admission threshold scores at many schools tend to decrease. In addition to the reason of wanting to expand the recruitment source, this year schools set lower threshold scores because the average high school graduation exam scores of many subjects decreased. The average score for Math decreased by 1.67; English decreased by 0.03; Literature decreased by 0.23, Chemistry decreased by 0.66... compared to 2024, which has a significant impact on traditional admission combinations such as A00, A01, B00, D01...
Up to now, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance has taken the minimum score for admission based on the high school graduation exam results, 1-4 points lower than in 2024, depending on the training major. Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade also announced that it will accept applications from 16 points, applicable to all majors and programs; 2-4 points lower than last year. University of Finance and Marketing takes the minimum score of 15 based on the high school graduation exam scores, 1-4 points lower than in 2024.
Faced with the news of low admission scores, many candidates with scores close to the admission score were quite happy, saying they might apply to hot majors and top schools. Some candidates who were only 1-2 points above the admission score were already considering finalizing their preferences. Experts have warned that this situation is quite dangerous, because candidates may be subjective and confuse the admission score with the standard score.
In fact, the floor score (also known as the score to ensure input quality) is the lowest score that candidates are allowed to register for admission to a certain major or school, and is not the standard score. The standard score for admission can be equal to or greater than the floor score, depending on the quota, number and score distribution of registered candidates.
In recent years, besides schools (usually private schools, local schools) with admission scores close to or equal to the floor score, middle and upper-ranked schools, although setting a fairly low floor score, have high admission scores, sometimes 5-10 points higher. Many candidates have lost the opportunity to be admitted to their desired major because of confusion between these two types of scores.
To avoid falling into the “floor score trap”, candidates need to refer to the difference between the floor score and the benchmark score of the previous year and find out about this year’s quota for the major before registering their wishes. If the candidate’s test score is lower than or equal to the benchmark score of the previous year for the major at the school they want, they should consider carefully, even though the benchmark scores of traditional combinations in this year’s admissions are predicted to decrease.
However, candidates should not be too stressed, because with the new admission regulations, this year all methods must be considered at the same time, with equivalent conversion of admission scores, so the chance of being admitted by considering high school graduation exam scores will be higher than in 2024.
It is important that before registering for admission, candidates need to carefully refer to the admission information of the schools, pay attention to the floor score, proof of bonus points, conversion points, equivalent conversion principles and arrange their wishes scientifically . These are the right steps for candidates to optimize their chances of admission, not to be hasty when the floor score is low.
