During the phone call, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed that Canada "will always stand by Kiev's defense," and pointed out that Europe cannot have lasting peace if Ukraine's security is not guaranteed.
Mr. Trudeau once again called for Ukraine to be included in the negotiations.
The move comes as officials from US President Donald Trump meet with their Russian counterparts to discuss a deal to end the conflict without Kiev's involvement.
“The two leaders emphasized that any peaceful resolution to the conflict must include Ukraine at the negotiating table,” according to a summary of the call between Trudeau and Zelensky released by the Canadian Prime Minister’s office.
Outside of countries bordering Ukraine, Canada is home to the world's largest Ukrainian community and Ottawa is also one of Kiev's strongest supporters in its conflict with Moscow.
On the same day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a phone call with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.
A statement from the Canadian Prime Minister's Office said the two leaders discussed "unwavering support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."
On the X platform, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence in the direction taken by Western allies, while calling on Canada and others to step up sanctions on Russia's oil industry and take advantage of Moscow's frozen assets.
“A unified stance is the key to ensuring lasting peace. We appreciate Canada’s G7 presidency this year and look forward to its leadership,” Zelensky wrote.
