According to a report from SCMP , Xiaomi is making a big bet on artificial intelligence (AI) by pouring massive resources into open-source models. The goal of this strategy is to protect the company's vast hardware ecosystem while ensuring that the next generation of smartphones and electric vehicles doesn't fall behind in the technology race.

Last month, the company unveiled its latest AI model, "MiMo-V2.5-Pro." The independent review platform Artificial Analysis immediately ranked it as the world's leading open-source model in terms of autonomous capabilities (agentic capabilities). This term refers to the ability of an AI system to perform complex, multi-step tasks independently without human intervention.

Topping the rankings marks a rapid leap forward, considering Xiaomi only began releasing open-source AI systems a year ago. To maintain this momentum, the company has just committed over $8.8 billion to AI-related investments over the next three years. This figure confirms the company's ambition to independently develop the most advanced AI models.

Xiaomi's strategy extends beyond software to include self-sufficiency in processor chips. Mastering the semiconductor supply chain allows the company to optimize device performance. The company aspires to manufacture chips capable of competing head-to-head with Apple.

According to SCMP , the Chinese market is currently witnessing fierce AI competition. Major competitors are continuously launching large-scale language models with increasingly cheaper service prices.

Having a strong, self-reliant model allows Xiaomi to avoid dependence on third-party partners. Its AI-integrated hardware ecosystem will help the company retain users better. In other words, the $8.8 billion investment is insurance for the company's future in the AI era.

“The MiMo-V2.5-Pro model is designed for the most challenging and complex work objectives. We assign it tasks that would take human experts days or weeks to complete, allowing it to independently handle long-term processes,” shared a representative from Xiaomi's AI research team.
