The story of the 'mobile' printing house in the swamp

During the difficult days of the Southern revolution, a printing factory was established in the Dong Thap Muoi region with many difficulties. The printing staff and workers sacrificed their blood and bones to build the printing house from scratch. That was the Phan Van Mang Printing House of Long An province (the predecessor of today's Tay Ninh province), where the first printing machine was created by our own staff.

“In 1960, the Provincial Party Committee met to discuss experiences in mobilizing the masses to rise up and destroy the enemy's secret hamlets, to learn from the experience of building political forces, military movements, and building the Party at the grassroots level, etc. But at that time, the Party's propaganda and agitation work relied only on a radio in a secret underground bunker that recorded slow-reading news from the Voice of Vietnam Radio and revolutionary documents, leaflets, and slogans had to be printed in "susoa", in powder, etc. And a "mobile" printing house in the plains was established to serve political tasks. In 1961, the printing house was named after Phan Van Mang, a revolutionary cadre loyal to the Party, filial to the people, and devoted himself to the country" - former Deputy Director of the Printing House Phan Van Mang, former Vice Principal of the Le Xoàn Provincial Political School, recounted.

Having worked at Phan Van Mang Printing House since 1963, in 1968, Mr. Le Xoàn was transferred to do propaganda work in preparation for the Mau Than Campaign. During the period of 1970-1971, the Printing House was also "wiped out" by the enemy in terms of facilities and equipment, Mr. Le Xoàn was again transferred to rebuild the Printing House. He was a witness to the difficult yet glorious days of Phan Van Mang Printing House - an inseparable part of journalism and propaganda activities during the resistance years.

Former Deputy Director of the Printing House Phan Van Mang, former Vice Principal of Le Xoàn Provincial Political School is a historical witness to the difficult and glorious days of Phan Van Mang Printing House.

Phan Van Mang Printing House is called a “mobile” printing house because in order to print, avoid enemy eyes and attacks, and adapt to the harsh natural conditions of Dong Thap Muoi, the printing house’s staff and workers must always be flexible and the printing house must move continuously. Each time they move, the staff and soldiers take turns carrying machines, lead type, weapons, etc. While moving, the staff of Phan Van Mang Printing House still work and produce to be self-sufficient in food.

The printing house's "base" at that time was just a roof of bamboo pillars and leaves, enough for equipment and a few bamboo strips for resting. When the water level rose, the printing house floor was raised to the water level. To avoid enemy attacks, sometimes the printing machine and the type department had to be placed far apart. The printing house staff at that time not only had to do printing but also had to always maintain strict discipline of "walking without marks, cooking without smoke".

To serve the revolution, the cadres and workers of the printing house had to work more than 16 hours a day. There were comrades who worked tirelessly regardless of the time. With the experience gained from the resistance war against the French, comrades Le Van Thanh, Nguyen Khac Tu, Tran Van Tru,... created a typo printing machine from wood and iron bars pulled from the fence of the Giong Bung secret area with their bare hands.

After many efforts, Long An's first self-made printing machine was completed. May 1, 1961 was the inauguration day of the self-made Liberation printing machine, which was also the day the provincial printing house named after the staunch communist Phan Van Mang was officially established.

Also after that event, the reputation of Phan Van Mang Printing House "flew far and wide", many provinces sent cadres to learn experience in binding and using the machine.

"During the period of fighting against the US to save the country, Phan Van Mang Printing House also provided technical staff and skilled workers for the Central Government to build Tran Phu Printing House. Many cadres who grew up from the printing house became excellent soldiers and heroes in the army, including Truong Cong Xuong, Nguyen Van The,..." - Mr. Le Xoàn said.

During the resistance war against French colonialism, comrade Phan Van Mang was a member of the Cho Lon Provincial Party Committee. He died in 1958 in Ben Luc. He was a loyal revolutionary cadre, the pride of revolutionaries at that time.

Phan Van Mang Printing House is a unit that has made great contributions to the province's propaganda work. In early 1963, Quyet Tien newspaper was born under the official name of the Long An Provincial National Liberation Front, the first issue was printed at Phan Van Mang Printing House. The newspaper was loved by the people and soldiers, so the number of copies printed had to be increased and the time shortened. The printing house's staff and soldiers researched and improved printing techniques to complete the task. At that time, the number of copies of Quyet Tien newspaper was up to 800.

Author Thach Phuong, editor-in-chief of Long An Geography, once commented: “Talking about the province’s press achievements without mentioning the role of the printing house is a big mistake because during the 30 years of war, especially during the 21 years of fighting the US to save the country, the province’s printing house and press were closely linked together. Even without the printing house (or printing department), there would be no press.”

After 1975, Phan Van Mang Printing House merged with Kien Tuong Printing House, continued to promote tradition and complete assigned tasks. In 1977, Phan Van Mang Printing House changed its name to Phan Van Mang Printing Enterprise. With its great contributions, the collective of cadres, workers and civil servants of Phan Van Mang Printing Enterprise was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal./.
