The world's tallest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge, has just appeared in India. It stands 359 meters above the river, 29 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower in France. The bridge spans the Chenab River in the Jammu and Kashmir region.
After decades of construction, the bridge is scheduled to open to visitors in late December or January 2024. Measuring 1,315 meters in length, the bridge is part of a project linking India's railway network to the Kashmir Valley. In addition to the Chenab Bridge, the project also includes the country's longest transport tunnel and Indian Railway's first suspension bridge.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes these infrastructure investments are powerful tools for integration, political influence, and connecting regions with key cities. Linking Kashmir to other regions by rail will boost industrial and agricultural sectors.
Previously, the only road connecting Kashmir to other regions was the 300-kilometer Srinagar-Jammu highway. This route was prone to traffic accidents and was closed during the winter months, making travel difficult for residents.
However, the Chenab Bridge project isn't necessarily positive for Indians. Speaking to CNN, Sushant Singh, a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research in India, said: “In recent years, Kashmir has been affected by a number of regulations.” This has caused concern among the population.
