BOTH VAR AND PLAYERS NEED MORE IMPROVEMENT
The Vietnam national football team (VN) was eliminated early from the 2023 Asian Cup after 3 consecutive losses with 4 goals scored, 2 red cards, and 4 penalties. The fouls committed by Viet Anh, Thanh Binh, Van Khang, Thanh Long, Minh Trong... clearly show that the Vietnamese players are not familiar with the skills to play under VAR supervision. A veteran referee (TT) said: "The TT Board sent people to instruct on VAR technology for the clubs, but is the level of communication of the instructors at the clubs even? A few players and even the coaching staff did not pay attention when listening, leading to the consequence that when they entered the field, they had the results we just saw. Next, in tense matches, it is easy for some players to forget that there is VAR, so they still show their habits in the V-League. Furthermore, it must be admitted that the V-League is still not synchronized in terms of VAR. There are matches where VAR is applied but there are matches where it is not, leading to players still not being fully focused, still maintaining the habit of playing tricks without VAR such as grabbing and pulling the opponent...
Jackie Chan received a second yellow card that turned into a red card and had to leave the field in the match against Indonesia at the 2023 Asian Cup.
To form the habit of playing with VAR, eliminating unnecessary and inappropriate movements, the only way is to popularize VAR in all V-League matches. This will of course take time, when FIFA assesses our readiness in terms of facilities, equipment and especially human resources. It is a fact that the level of Vietnamese referees is still not uniform and consistent, the same situation will still have different perspectives. For example, VAR took away the goal of the Vietnamese team against the Iraqi team because it determined that Khuat Van Khang was offside when he ran back and stood in front, blocking his vision, affecting the ability to play the ball of the defender standing in front who missed the ball, not the defender standing behind who scored an own goal. This is not something that commentators, players, or even referees can grasp and perceive correctly."
Quit the habit of "blinding" the referee
According to sports television directors, V-League is currently using 8 cameras for each match, taking advantage of television angles, so the quality is sometimes not as high as the controversial penalty kick (TT said the ball touched midfielder Diakite's hand) in the match between Hai Phong Club and HAGL at Lach Tray Stadium in round 1 of V-League 2023 - 2024.
The Organizing Committee also needs to ensure the quality of the equipment in the specialized VAR vehicle that FIFA provides to VFF. However, according to referee Pham Chu Thien: "VAR brings fairness to matches. Of course, not all situations will be intervened by VAR, except for cases of whether or not there is a penalty, whether or not there is a red card, whether or not there is a goal, whether or not the crossbar has been hit, or the wrong card... Like at the 2023 Asian Cup, Thanh Binh grabbing the other player's shirt was definitely wrong, even though Binh did not commit an excessive or violent foul. In addition, I know there are players who still have experience in "covering eyes", so that the referee cannot observe, but with VAR, it will not be possible. In addition, Vietnamese players in major tournaments often get cards for diving or reacting to the referee. In fact, players need to learn how to react moderately, because when they react strongly, asking the referee to check VAR or draw a card against the opponent, they will likely get a card. This is not new, but the Vietnamese team still gets cards from international referees".
Mr. Thien continued: "In short, each player and member of the coaching staff must always proactively shape their competitive spirit, thereby creating standard playing behavior in the presence of VAR. Only then can we limit the habit of using tricks or being unsafe in the penalty area. Similarly, attacking players must also understand that when there is VAR, if they pretend, they will not be able to fool the referee. In particular, coaches and players need to create the habit of not caring whether they are offside or not, playing the ball to the end of the situation. Don't think that you or your teammates are offside and stop. Now the pace of the match is very fast, determining whether or not you are offside is very sensitive and sometimes VAR needs to be involved."
