In 2018, Tan Lang commune introduced watermelon into a trial planting area of 500 m² to evaluate its adaptability to local natural conditions. After that, the watermelon growing area was expanded year by year. In the 2025 crop alone, farmers in the whole commune planted 5 hectares of watermelon, with an expected yield of about 20-22 tons/ha. According to the people, after deducting production costs, the profit was about 20-30 million VND/ha/crop. In production, people intercropped watermelon with many different crops to increase income and maintain the fertility of the production land.

Mr. Tran Van Hoa, Yen Thinh village, Tan Lang commune, shared: Watermelon is a short-term crop, harvested after about 60-70 days, requiring little care. Families often plant in the second lunar month, when the soil is moist enough thanks to spring rain, then fertilize and wait for the plant to bear fruit. During the stage when the plant bears young fruit, it is necessary to pay attention to disease prevention and supplement NPK fertilizer. After this period, the fruit develops stably, just need to prop the fruit up high to avoid rotting, do not need to fertilize much.

Mr. Le Xuan Hoang, Yen Thinh village, started growing watermelon in 2020 on an area of 5,000 m², harvesting more than 10 tons. Seeing that traders wanted to buy more melons and cantaloupes, he researched and intercropped these varieties. Mr. Hoang said: Currently, his family has 5,000 m² of watermelon and more than 3,000 m² of cantaloupes and cantaloupes. These types of melons are highly appreciated by consumers, the average selling price for watermelon and cantaloupes is   15 thousand VND/kg; and for melon 25 thousand VND/kg.

Farmers in Tan Lang commune exchange experiences in caring for watermelons before harvest.

In 2025, the commune will plant 2 new hectares in Yen Thinh village. Mr. Ban Van Nhau, Vice Chairman of Tan Lang Commune People's Committee, said: Currently, the output is still not enough to meet consumption demand. The commune's cultivation of watermelon, melon, and cantaloupe is still in its early stages. In order to build a brand and move towards establishing cooperatives and production cooperative groups, the commune is mobilizing people to expand the planting area and apply organic production processes from the beginning towards sustainable development.
