Over the past 3 decades, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union (VGTU) has not only been the leading flag in the Vietnamese Trade Union system but also a common home full of love, a place to protect and practically care for union members and workers. The journey of keeping the fire burning and fueling the fire for union members and workers
The Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union was established in the context of the country's strong transformation following the renovation process. The 6th Congress of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (1988-1993 term) proposed a policy of improving the organization and enhancing the effectiveness of trade union activities. In that spirit, on December 16, 1991, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL) issued Decision No. 932/QD-TLĐ, officially establishing the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union under the VGCL. On January 25, 1992, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union was officially launched, marking an important milestone: cadres, workers and laborers in the Oil and Gas industry operated in a unified trade union organization. This not only strengthened connectivity but also improved leadership effectiveness, promoted collective strength in performing production and business tasks, building and developing the Oil and Gas industry.
In the early period, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union only managed about 10 grassroots unions, with more than 6,000 union members. However, with the close leadership of the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union, the consensus of the grassroots unions and union members, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union quickly consolidated its apparatus, improved its staff, and focused on building production emulation movements and technical improvements. Over the past 33 years, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union has gone through many stages of development, becoming one of the most typical union organizations in the country. To date, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union manages 158 grassroots unions, 9 upper-level unions, with nearly 60,000 union members. This is a remarkable growth in scale, affirming its pioneering role in protecting the rights of workers, while closely associated with the development of the Oil and Gas industry.
The Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union is always innovative and creative in its activities to best meet the needs of union members and employees. Typical movements such as "Good workers, creative workers", "Promoting technical innovation initiatives", or programs with imprints such as "Spring of Oil and Gas Love", "Happy and Peaceful Tet" have become the driving force to promote labor productivity, while arousing the spirit of solidarity and responsibility in the entire system. In particular, "Oil and Gas Culture Week", the launching ceremony of "Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union Television News" along with a series of cultural and sports events, meaningful activities have become typical cultural features, enriching the spiritual life of union members. In 2024, the activities of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union all exceeded the targets assigned by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.

The trade union is not only a place to protect the rights but also a companion of workers. The Vietnam Oil and Gas Group Trade Union always proactively participates in building and contributing ideas to the policies and regulations of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, especially in collective labor agreements, to ensure optimal benefits for workers. Not stopping at protecting basic rights, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group Trade Union also promotes welfare programs, bringing practical benefits to union members and workers.
In addition, the activities of "repaying gratitude" and social security have been widely implemented by the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union, demonstrating the spirit of responsibility to the community. From supporting workers in difficulty and suffering from occupational diseases, to organizing emulation movements combined with caring for the material and spiritual lives of union members and workers, all create the image of a dedicated and responsible trade union organization. During more than 3 decades of construction and development, through 7 Congresses, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union has performed well the function of representing workers, civil servants and laborers with innovative, creative, practical programs and activities suitable to the conditions of the unit; participating in the management and care of the lives of workers and laborers in the whole industry; closely following and grasping the production and business situation, the aspirations of officers and employees to work with the leaders of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation (now the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group - Petrovietnam) to plan regimes and policies related to laborers. In particular, at the 7th Congress of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, term 2023-2028, with the motto "Innovation - Democracy - Solidarity - Development", the Congress comprehensively assessed the achieved results, pointed out the limitations and difficulties, summarized the lessons of the previous term and decided on the goals, directions and tasks of the new term.

Through the Congress, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union, with its role and responsibility as an organization representing the voice of workers, called on all levels of trade unions to continue to uphold the spirit of responsibility, strongly innovate the organization and activities, build a strong and professional trade union organization, focus on caring for and improving the welfare of union members and workers; enrich the spiritual life, build a team of oil and gas workers "One team, one goal", foster the Petrovietnam culture, motivate workers to nurture and promote the core values of "Aspiration - Intelligence - Professionalism - Compassion", contributing to the cause of building a strong and sustainable Vietnam Oil and Gas Group.
Step into the future
After 33 years on the journey of keeping the fire alive, continuing the 34-year historical milestone, Ms. Nghiem Thuy Lan, President of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, emphasized that 2025 is the year of the 4th Congress, term 2025-2030, of the Party Committee of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group; followed by the second year of great significance in implementing the Resolution of the 13th Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union, the Resolution of the 7th Congress of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group; the fourth year of implementing the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party, Resolution 02-NQ/TW dated June 12, 2021 of the Politburo on "Innovation of organization and operation of Vietnam Trade Union in the new situation". Along with that, in the spirit of Conclusion 76-KL/TW of the Politburo, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group aims to build and develop into a National Industry - Energy Group.
However, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union will have to face new requirements and challenges, which are: The process of developing domestic and international market economy; opportunities and challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, increasingly deep international integration; allowing the establishment of labor organizations in enterprises will have a profound impact on employment, quality of human resources, attracting and gathering workers... That context poses an urgent requirement for stronger and more substantial innovation in the organization and activities of trade unions in general and the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union in particular. Therefore, building the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union in the new situation is extremely necessary. The Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union must both develop its organizational apparatus and staff, and build harmonious relationships within enterprises, care for, represent and protect the legitimate and legal rights and interests of workers.

New difficulties and challenges in the operations of the Group and its member units will have a strong impact on the feelings, working life, income and welfare of employees, requiring the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union and all levels of trade unions to clearly identify the challenges in the operations of each level and unit in order to set appropriate goals and action programs and have effective implementation solutions. Therefore, in the coming period, under the leadership of the Party Committee, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union will, together with political and social organizations, be determined to mobilize and arouse the spirit of employees to strive to well implement the strategic goals of developing the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group into a National Industry - Energy Group associated with development, improving operational efficiency in traditional energy fields, as well as participating in the value chain of new energy, renewable energy, continuing to be the locomotive in ensuring energy security, national defense security, and accompanying the Group with the country to enter a new era, an era of national development.
At the same time, focus on implementing the Resolutions of the 13th Congress of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, the Resolution of the 7th Congress of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, and innovate the organization and operation of trade unions according to the motto of focusing on the grassroots. Thoroughly grasp and implement the Trade Union Law (amended) after it is passed by the National Assembly. In particular, clearly define the tasks of each level of trade unions; focus on representing, caring for, and protecting the legitimate and legal rights and interests of union members and workers; strengthen the development of union members' interests, take union members' interests as a rallying point to attract union members and workers; perfect the service methods, promote the role of union members in participating in building a strong trade union organization; actively build harmonious, progressive, stable and developing labor relations; constantly improve the quality of the union staff. In addition, promote emulation movements, spread examples of "good people, good deeds", encourage union members and workers to strive to complete and exceed the targets and tasks of the Group's production and business, creating a premise for successfully implementing the targets of the Resolutions of Congresses at all levels, the 4th Congress of the Party Committee of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group and the 14th Congress of the Party right from the first year of the Congress's term. At the same time, promote propaganda, introduce and promote the Petrovietnam brand; the prestige and position of the trade union organization and the image of Oil and Gas workers attached to the industry, responsible to the people and the country.
At the same time, develop a program for coordinating work between the Group's political and social organizations; direct affiliated trade unions to proactively coordinate with the Youth Union and Veterans Association at the same level to develop work programs, creating a combined strength to improve the effectiveness of trade union activities; mobilize resources to care for the legitimate interests of union members and employees.
Vietnam General Confederation of Labor not only improves the effectiveness of trade union activities but also actively expands international cooperation relations.
With the pride of 33 years of construction and development, Ms. Nghiem Thuy Lan stated that the Vietnam Oil and Gas Trade Union will seize the opportunity, promote the highest spirit of solidarity, join hands to overcome challenges, accompany the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group to care for and protect the legitimate and legal rights and interests, be a solid support for union members and employees, contribute significantly to the completion of the tasks of the unit and the Group assigned by the Party and the Government, worthy of being an organization for union members and employees, maintaining the pioneering position of the Vietnam Trade Union.
