Caring for the elderly to live happily and healthily

Visiting, giving gifts, taking care of health, establishing intergenerational self-help clubs, cultural, artistic and sports clubs... are outstanding activities that the elderly associations at all levels in the province are implementing, helping members live happily and healthily.

The province currently has 125,000 elderly members. Every year, the association at all levels focuses on implementing the Elderly Health Care Project for the 2017-2025 period; coordinating with mass organizations to propagate the movement "All people care for, support, and promote the role of the elderly"; the Provincial People's Committee's plan for elderly health care until 2030. Organizing activities to care for the health and spiritual life of members on holidays, New Year, Traditional Day of the Vietnamese Elderly (June 6), International Day of the Elderly (October 1).

Mr. Lo Mai Kien, Chairman of the Provincial Elderly Association, said: The Association has directed the association's branches to compile statistics and make a list of members in communes and towns for screening and health monitoring records. At the same time, review cases of the elderly who have not been granted health insurance cards to find support solutions. Coordinate with medical units to organize annual health check-ups and provide free medicine at grassroots health facilities. In addition, the Association also encourages members to grow and use medicinal herbs at home to treat some common diseases. Currently, 85% of the elderly members in the province have been granted health insurance cards; 51.2% of the elderly have health monitoring and management records; 100% of the elderly who come to medical facilities for medical examination and treatment are guaranteed policies and preferential regimes.

Suffering from high blood pressure and mild stroke, every month, Ms. Lo Thi On, Pung village, Pung Tra commune, Thuan Chau district, goes to the commune health station for a health check-up and to get medicine under the health insurance regime. Ms. On said: Because I have a history of underlying diseases, I was given a health monitoring book. Every time I come for a check-up, I am advised and guided on a suitable diet and rest regimen, so my health has stabilized.

Mr. Lo Van Doi, Head of Pung Tra Commune Health Station, informed: Every year, the Station has implemented periodic health check-ups for the elderly. Coordinated with hospitals and units to organize medical examinations and treatment for local people, with priority given to free medical examinations and medicine distribution for the elderly. Currently, the Station manages more than 130 elderly people with underlying diseases, who come to the station for medical examinations and medicine collection every month; 100% of the elderly are issued health insurance cards.

To improve health and spiritual life for members, the association has established and maintained 900 cultural, artistic and physical education clubs, with over 42,000 elderly people participating; 129 intergenerational self-help clubs to visit the sick, participate in association movements and help each other develop the economy . Since the beginning of the year, the Provincial Association of the Elderly has coordinated with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to successfully organize the 2025 Son La Provincial Sports Tournament for the Elderly, with the participation of nearly 200 members, competing in the following sports: Table tennis, badminton, physical education and chess. In addition, the association has also organized cultural, artistic and sports exchange activities and competitions... to create a joyful and exciting atmosphere, encouraging the elderly to live happily and healthily.

Mr. Pham Van Hoa, Chairman of the Association of the Elderly in Moc Ly Ward, Moc Chau Town, said: The whole ward has 30 cultural, artistic, health care, and sports clubs that maintain activities, with more than 700 members. Every day, the clubs maintain physical training and limit diseases of the elderly. When there is an opportunity to exchange or compete, the teams actively practice, buy their own costumes and performance props. To celebrate the 84th anniversary of the Traditional Day of the Elderly in Vietnam (June 6, 2025), the Association organized the cultural exchange program "Happy and Healthy Golden Age" and a volleyball tournament between branches, creating opportunities for members to meet and share the joy of old age.

In addition, the work of caring for the material and spiritual life of members has also been actively implemented. Since the beginning of the year, the Provincial Elderly Association has coordinated with the Central Vietnam Elderly Association to present 400 gifts; districts, towns and cities have presented more than 11,000 gifts, with a total cost of 6.3 billion VND to the elderly in difficult circumstances. Longevity celebrations were organized for more than 12,000 elderly people, of which more than 1,100 elderly people are 100 years old or older. More than 23,600 elderly people are entitled to social allowances...

Through practical and meaningful activities, the Elderly Associations in the province have been contributing to comprehensively taking care of the material and spiritual life of their members. From there, the elderly continue to promote their role, prestige and experience, accompanying their children and grandchildren to build their homeland to become more and more prosperous and civilized.
