On the evening of November 18, midfielder Nguyen Van Truong had an MRI scan at a hospital in Chengdu (China), after an injury he suffered in the final match of the CFA Team China - Panda Cup 2025 International Friendly Tournament that took place on the same afternoon.
Van Truong started for the Vietnam U22 team in the 0-1 loss to the South Korean U22 team. The captain of the Vietnam U22 team was injured after a collision with a South Korean U22 player in the 78th minute and had to leave the field on a stretcher.
At that time, the U22 Vietnam team also ran out of substitutions, forced to play with 10 men on the field until the end of the match and not lose any more.
Realizing that Van Truong's knee injury was quite serious, the coaching staff of the Vietnam U22 team and the medical team at the stadium took him to the hospital for examination.
After the match ended, acting head coach Dinh Hong Vinh and Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), who is also the Head of the Vietnam U22 team, Tran Anh Tu, went to the hospital with Van Truong.
MRI results showed that Van Truong had damage to the lateral tibial cortex, tendons, and medial-lateral ligaments. In addition, he also needed to be monitored for a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Head of the delegation Tran Anh Tu said that with this injury, Van Truong's chance of participating in SEA Games 33 is 50-50, as the football event of SEA Games 33 is only two weeks away.
Meanwhile, coach Dinh Hong Vinh said Van Truong needs to be re-examined in Vietnam to know the exact extent of the injury, as well as the recovery ability of this 1.82m tall midfielder.
According to the plan, the U22 Vietnam team will arrive in Hanoi tomorrow afternoon (November 19). The team will rest for a few days, before returning to practice in Ba Ria - Vung Tau (expected November 23) with coach Kim Sang Sik to prepare for the final stage.
The Vietnam U22 team is expected to arrive in Thailand on the morning of December 2 and then fly to Songkhla to prepare for two matches with Laos U22 (December 4) and Malaysia (December 11) there.
