Male student Nguyen Phi Hao just achieved IELTS score 8.0.
With a score of 8.0 IELTS (listening 8.5; reading 8.5; writing 8.0 and speaking 6.5), Nguyen Phi Hao has made a remarkable mark in the key achievements of Cu Huy Can High School, because this is the first time the school has had a student achieve this result.
Sharing his joy at achieving an 8.0 IELTS, Phi Hao confided: "I was really surprised and happy because I didn't think I could achieve this score on my first try. This achievement further strengthens my belief that, with the right self-study method, all barriers can be broken."
To achieve that result, Phi Hao has built a clear learning path, starting with self-assessment of his level. Before practicing skills, Phi Hao took tests to determine his strengths and weaknesses in listening, speaking, reading and writing. From there, he searched for suitable materials such as books, exercises, instructional videos and international resources. This helped him improve his ability to listen and read academic texts in English.

Nguyen Phi Hao's IELTS score of 8.0 is the highest achievement a student of Cu Huy Can High School has ever achieved.
Of the four skills, speaking is the part Phi Hao feels the least confident in. To improve his speaking ability, Phi Hao actively practiced and recorded his voice to self-evaluate and correct pronunciation errors. The male student shared: “I realized that my weaknesses are fluency and vocabulary when responding. Therefore, in addition to learning vocabulary by topic, I spend most of my time practicing speaking every day and asking teachers and friends to correct my mistakes directly. Although my speaking score is not as high as other skills, I am satisfied because I have overcome the psychological barrier and improved significantly compared to before.”
Phi Hao maintains the habit of being exposed to English every day through activities such as: reading books, listening to podcasts, watching videos and solving exercises. Thanks to dividing goals into small parts and completing them regularly, studying is no longer a burden but has become a natural habit. The 8.0 IELTS achievement is even more admirable because it was conquered by Phi Hao by self-studying at home and in class, without any support from test preparation centers.
“I think the most important thing is not how many hours a day you study or where you study, but how determined you are. Breaking down your goals helps you avoid being overwhelmed. Every day, you only need to spend a certain amount of time on English, whether it is 30 minutes reading the news or 1 hour doing homework, as long as you maintain a regular study schedule, it can help you achieve the results you want,” said the male student.

In class, Phi Hao often discusses lessons with teachers and friends.
It is known that Cu Huy Can High School is located in the mountainous commune of Mai Hoa, where learning conditions, especially foreign languages, are still limited. However, Phi Hao has proven that the spirit of self-study can overcome all limits. He shared: "The teachers at school are very dedicated, always guiding me when I encounter difficulties. Although the conditions are not as good as in urban areas, I believe that as long as we proactively find materials and self-study, we can still achieve high results."
“The most impressive thing about Hao is his self-discipline and initiative in learning. He knows how to apply knowledge into practice, studying well and practicing life skills at the same time. Hao’s achievements are proof of his diligence, perseverance and courage” - commented Mr. Nguyen The Anh - homeroom teacher of class 12A1.
In addition to studying English, Phi Hao also made his mark in many other subjects. In the 2024-2025 school year, he won second prize in Math in the provincial excellent student competition and third prize in provincial chess.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thien - Phi Hao's mother confided: "The family always encourages him to study, but never forces him. All results today are his efforts. We only create conditions for him to have the best learning environment. Hopefully, the future ahead will always be open as the way he is trying and conquering his dream every day."

Phi Hao's IELTS test results have inspired his classmates and the whole school to study.
Despite achieving an admirable IELTS score, Phi Hao still maintains a very clear view on the purpose of learning a foreign language. He emphasized: “IELTS is just a certificate. The important thing is the learning process, practice and the joy of understanding English. When learning a foreign language, it is not only about getting a score but also opening the door to access the world , exchanging culture and knowledge.”
With an IELTS score of 8.0 and comprehensive academic achievements, Phi Hao has many opportunities to enter top universities in Vietnam, as well as hunt for international scholarships. However, Phi Hao does not stop there, he aims to continue improving his English, learn more Math and natural sciences, and practice soft skills to prepare for a wide-open future of study and career.
