This morning (November 28), Hanoi ranked 4th in the list of nearly 100 cities ranked for air quality by the Air Visual application.

Hanoi and the northern provinces of our country have been experiencing a prolonged period of air pollution for many days. Notably, the pollution situation shows signs of continuing to increase this morning.

Air Visual, a worldwide air quality monitoring application, recorded Hanoi's air quality index (AQI) at 7 a.m. this morning at 225 - a very bad threshold (very harmful to everyone's health), ranking 4th in a list of nearly 100 cities, just behind Delhi in India, Lahore and Karachi in Pakistan - the most polluted capitals in the world for many years.

Hanoi is the 4th most polluted in the world this morning.

The results recorded by Air Visual are quite similar to the domestic air quality monitoring system.

The VN Air application of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment recorded Hanoi's air quality this morning at a very poor level with an AQI of 214 at the Long Bien measuring point. Many other areas in the North also recorded poor to very poor to hazardous air quality such as Bac Ninh.

PAM Air - the air quality monitoring application with the largest number of measurement points in Vietnam recorded purple air covering Hanoi and the northern provinces, with some points reaching the brown threshold (the most dangerous threshold for human health with recommendations for everyone to stay indoors).

In particular, most districts such as Thanh Xuan, Cau Giay, Bac Tu Liem, Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Dong Da, Gia Lam, Dong Anh all recorded pollution levels at very bad levels (AQI index from 200-300). Only the measuring point at Sao Mai Center, Thanh Xuan district recorded pollution levels at brown levels (AQI index above 300).

Air pollution has lasted for many days in Hanoi.

The US Embassy’s air quality monitoring site said that air pollution in Hanoi and northern provinces could last until around Thursday (November 30). Around December 1, due to the influence of a weak cold front, air quality in the capital could improve somewhat.

However, experts also warn that the North is in the most serious air pollution season of the year.

According to the national environmental report on air environment, the most serious pollution period in the North is concentrated in winter (from October to March every year) when unfavorable weather conditions cause pollutants to not disperse high up but concentrate close to the ground.

During this time, the North often suffers from prolonged periods of pollution, seriously affecting human health, especially the elderly, children, and people with respiratory diseases.

Sources of air pollution are identified as coming from traffic, industry, construction and civil activities such as burning garbage and burning straw.

Studies have shown a strong link between days of severe air pollution and increased numbers of hospital admissions for respiratory diseases in major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (IMHE, 2019), air pollution ranks 5th among the leading risk factors for death and disability in Vietnam, after causes such as high blood pressure, blood sugar, smoking and diet.

Experts recommend that people need to regularly monitor air quality and take appropriate health protection measures.

Ministry of Health recommends

On days of severe air pollution, people should limit going out, exercising, and working outdoors when air quality is poor. When going out, they should use quality masks and wear them properly (ensure they fit tightly on the face).

Clean your nose and gargle with saline morning and night, especially after going out. Rinse your eyes with saline in the evening before going to bed.

For smokers: should quit or limit smoking. For non-smokers, should stay away from cigarette smoke. Should limit opening windows and doors when the air is heavily polluted, especially families near traffic routes and polluted areas.

Regularly clean your room and house, keep your living environment clean and airy. Limit the use or replace the use of honeycomb coal stoves, firewood, straw with electric stoves, induction stoves or gas stoves. Plant trees in and around the house to help prevent dust and clean the air.

For people with respiratory diseases, chronic heart disease, cardiovascular disease, malnutrition, and the elderly, the Ministry of Health recommends taking the above preventive measures more strictly. In addition, it is necessary to limit going out as much as possible, especially when the air is heavily polluted.

Hanoi weather forecast for the next 3 days: Light fog, sunny afternoons with very high UV levels . Hanoi weather forecast for the next 3 days (November 27-29), the temperature in the area remains stable; sunny during the day, cold at night and morning. Note that the UV index is at a high level.
