A major fire broke out last night at the centuries-old Central Post Office building in Manila, Philippines.
The fire broke out at around 11pm on May 21 and is believed to have originated in the building’s basement, where documents, equipment, as well as mail and parcels are stored. By 6am on May 22, the fire was still at the highest alarm level and was brought under control at around 7am (local time).
There are no exact figures on the damage caused by the fire. However, according to the Philippine Fire Protection Department, the building's shell is still intact.

Meanwhile, Acting Postmaster General Luis Carlos said the fire destroyed many materials in the building, including stamp sets issued to mark anniversaries.
The Manila Central Post Office was built in 1926 and designed by renowned architect Juan Marocs Arellano. The building was severely damaged during World War II but was rebuilt in 1946. In November 2018, the building was recognized as an Important Cultural Property by the National Museum of the Philippines.
