Tet Doan Ngo is one of the biggest Tet holidays in our country, taking place on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month every year, also known as Tet Doan Duong or Tet Killing Insects.
Besides the meaning of destroying pests that destroy crops, Vietnamese people also believe that this is an opportunity to eliminate diseases during the changing seasons.
This year, the Dragon Boat Festival will fall on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
What is the best time to worship on the Dragon Boat Festival?
The Doan Ngo Festival is on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, Canh Ty day. There are 2 time frames for worshiping: at Ngo hour (11-13 o'clock) this is considered the most beautiful and standard time. However, if families cannot arrange the time, they can offer worship at 7-9 o'clock in the morning, these are both auspicious time frames, suitable for conducting spiritual worship rituals.
Along with preparing the offering tray, the Doan Ngo Festival prayer is also a very important part of the Doan Ngo Festival worship ritual.

The worshiper lights 9 candles, lights 9 incense sticks, kneels down 9 times and prays:
"With all my heart, I respectfully bow and invite my parents, grandparents, paternal and maternal ancestors. Today is the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival of the year... (current year), at the hour of Nham Ngo, Thanh Long Hoang Dao, which is an auspicious hour. With a sincere and filial heart, we prepare offerings, gold, incense, and candles to respectfully invite my parents, grandparents, paternal and maternal ancestors to come down to the altar to enjoy and witness our sincere hearts.
Dear parents, grandparents and ancestors, on the occasion of the Duanwu Festival, we respectfully invite our ancestors to help us hold a ceremony to pray to God and the Jade Emperor to protect the crops of the people and to grant the souls of our ancestors a cool life in heaven. We ask our parents, grandparents, ancestors and ancestors to bless and protect us. May wealth come. May blessings come. May virtues flourish. May wealth and prosperity continue. May all things go smoothly and as desired.
We wholeheartedly take refuge in this ceremony, respectfully invite our paternal and maternal ancestors to witness the ceremony.

Outdoor prayers for the Dragon Boat Festival
Light 9 candles, 9 incense sticks and recite the prayer:
"Light the candle and recite the sutra. Start the mind to light the candle. The halo is bright. The mind and body are pure. Dispel worries. The Supreme Great Pill. The light of compassion shines. The gods and immortals witness the altar. Light the incense and recite the sutra. The incense is placed on the precious cauldron. The energy reaches the mysterious space. The gods and humans unite. Pay homage to the moon palace. Supernatural powers are manifest. The Dharma appears in the nine clouds. The dantian is spiritually gathered. The mind takes refuge in the ceremony. Inform the gods and immortals."
Kneel down and bow 9 times. The prayer says:
"I respectfully and wholeheartedly pay homage. I respectfully bow to the Supreme Being. I respectfully bow to the Great Ancestor of the Hundred and the Great Ancestor of the Red Army. I respectfully bow to the Jade Emperor, the Green Emperor of the East, the Red Emperor of the South, the White Emperor of the West, and the Black Emperor of the North. I respectfully bow to the Holy King of the Great Demon Subduing Emperor, the Holy King of the Great Demon Exorcist Emperor, the Holy King of the Great Educator Emperor. I respectfully bow to the Three Purities Ancestor, the Primordial Heavenly Venerable, the Heavenly Virtue Venerable, and the Heavenly Treasure Venerable. I respectfully bow to the Great War God of the Universe, the Nine Heavenly Goddess, the Supreme Elder Lord, the Mysterious Heavenly Protector. I respectfully bow to the most righteous and supreme God of Wealth.
I pay homage to: All the Gods and Generals. Above, I will talk about the Gods and Generals of the Heavenly Generals. Middle, I will talk about the Gods and Generals of the Heavenly Soldiers. Below, I will talk about the Gods and Generals of the Heavenly Horses. I will pay homage to the Four Virtues Holy Mother. I will pay homage to the Four Seas Dragon Kings. I will pay homage to the Great City God of Tan Vien Mountain. I will pay homage to the Great King of the Country, the White Horse Spirit, and all the Gods of the Holy Kingdom. I will pay homage to the Mountain Gods, Dragon Gods, Earth Gods, Kitchen Gods, and all the Gods and Immortals in the Three Realms, who come down to witness this ceremony.
Today is the Duanwu Festival, witnessed by heaven and earth. We wholeheartedly prepare offerings of gold, money, incense, and candles, and respectfully present this petition to the Jade Emperor and all of you. Please suggest that the Supreme Being open his grace and clear his mind so that the entire world can be freed from all calamities, all evil spirits and ghosts cannot harm the human world, crops will be bountiful, all living beings will be able to sing and enjoy great happiness, good people who serve their people and country, kind people, people who do not kill, will have longer lives, accumulate blessings, be granted wealth, official position, blessings, good luck, and all things will go as desired.
I pray to God, the Jade Emperor, and all of you to grant our ancestors' souls the privilege of God, to ascend to heaven to enjoy great fortune and prosperity.
We pray to God, the Jade Emperor and all of you to be wise and see that the Gods and Fairies who specialize in destroying demons and evil spirits in the three realms can punish the evil and immoral people who are arrogant and powerful in the mortal world, and punish the evil spirits and monsters that harm crops.
We respectfully and sincerely pray: May wealth come, may blessings come, may virtues flourish, may wealth and fortune exist, relying on the heavenly beings, may virtues descend, may fragrance spread throughout the three realms and reach the ninth heavens. We pray for all families and the people of Vietnam, to have peace and prosperity, to be glorious and receive wisdom, to be at peace for generations, and to live ten thousand years.
May all sentient beings in the three realms enjoy the grace of God, and may all natural things glorify God.
