In his opening remarks, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed that the world is in a period of transformation and that this Summit on the Future is a crucial moment to propose groundbreaking solutions to problems that are increasingly beyond current capabilities, such as conflict, the impact of climate change, natural disasters, and epidemics.

UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang emphasized that challenges present many opportunities for improvement, reform, and further strengthening of global cooperation for the common good of humanity, and called on nations to unite for a prosperous future for all.

The Summit on the Future is considered a "once-in-a-generation" opportunity for the international community to agree on a vision and approach to building a better future for generations to come.

At the conference, delegates emphasized the need to promote strong and comprehensive reforms of multilateral institutions, strengthen the role and voice of developing countries in global financial institutions, and contribute to mobilizing sufficient and more effective resources to accelerate progress towards achieving sustainable development goals.

Against the backdrop of rapidly developing science and technology, delegates called for the early establishment of a foundation for a new global governance framework for emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Speaking at the first plenary session of the conference, General Secretary and President To Lam stated that human intelligence has helped change the world and human lives, but it is also humans who have created many challenges such as climate change, epidemics, resource depletion, and the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction…

Emphasizing that present choices will shape the future, the General Secretary and President stated that the world's sustainable development goals and the interests of humanity must be placed at the center, as the highest priority.

Accordingly, scientific and technological achievements must serve social progress, be oriented towards humanity, liberate humanity, promote holistic human development, continuously improve living standards, and ensure the interests and happiness of humankind and future generations.

Focusing on economic development, building a just and civilized society, improving people's quality of life, eradicating poverty, and promoting cooperation are crucial, but they must not be used as tools to fight against other nations, going against the aspirations for peace, development, equality, and justice of all peoples.

To achieve this during this pivotal period, General Secretary and President To Lam called for strengthening solidarity, cooperation, and mutual respect, adhering to international law and the United Nations Charter; and resolving disagreements and disputes through peaceful means.

At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen investment and research in fields that serve humanity, such as medicine, education and training, digital transformation, green transformation, and solutions to serve the broad masses of the people.

The General Secretary and President emphasized that countries, especially major powers, need to act responsibly, share common achievements in scientific and technological research for mutual development; and support the central and leading role of the United Nations , along with regional organizations, including ASEAN, in promoting cooperation and responding to global challenges and taking advantage of opportunities arising from scientific and technological progress.

General Secretary and President To Lam stated that humanity is facing a historic opportunity to usher the world into a new era, a better age of development, for progressive development, social justice, and a prosperous, free, and happy life for the people when everyone unites in understanding, action, effort, and close, effective cooperation.

At the same time, Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to making positive and effective contributions to common efforts to build a peaceful world, develop equally, and ensure a prosperous and happy life for all humanity.

On this occasion, the conference also unanimously adopted the Document for the Future, the Global Digital Document, and the Declaration on Future Generations. These documents are comprehensive, outlining ambitious actions and goals across all areas of cooperation within the United Nations .

Some specific priorities in the documents include increasing investment, mobilizing resources to accelerate progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, establishing foundational frameworks and principles to promote digital cooperation and innovation, transforming and strengthening United Nations institutions and international financial institutions, in order to build a better future for present and future generations.

The Summit on the Future is an initiative launched by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his 2021 report, “Our Common Agenda,” to promote discussion and cooperation, build innovative solutions to address global challenges such as climate change, science and technology development, social equity and progress, and enhance the effectiveness of global governance.
