Farmers in a remote commune of Dong Nai province take care of silkworms in a stilt house, just lying around and eating leaves.

By bringing silkworms to stilt houses instead of using bamboo baskets or nets as before, people in Dak Lua commune (Tan Phu district, Dong Nai) have more leisure time and higher economic efficiency.

New model: silkworm farming on the floor

In Dak Lua commune, more than 250 hectares of mulberry cultivation have been developed with the participation of about 300 households growing mulberry and raising silkworms. A large-scale specialized area for growing mulberry and raising silkworms has been formed in the locality. In particular, silkworm raising households in this locality are switching to a new model of raising silkworms on the floor, bringing high economic efficiency.

The local silkworm farming model is constantly changing, using new mulberry varieties with many advantages over traditional varieties such as: thick leaves, good disease resistance, helping silkworms eat well for a long time, especially saving time and picking labor...

Since ancient times, people have had a saying that "raising silkworms while standing up to eat rice" because this is a very hard traditional job, requiring many meticulous steps, especially during the "silkworms are idle" stage, the breeder must closely monitor every hour to keep up with feeding the silkworms. But now, mulberry farmers and silkworm breeders in Dak Lua commune have switched to applying a new model of raising silkworms on the floor instead of raising them on bamboo trays or nets as before. This new method not only saves time but also reduces the cost of buying bamboo trays. Thanks to that, silkworm breeding is no longer too hard but also brings higher economic efficiency than before.

According to local silkworm farmers, when raising silkworms on trays, farmers have to feed them continuously. But when raising them on the floor, farmers can save a lot of care. This new model also has many other benefits such as instead of cleaning the manure every day, now farmers only clean it once every 5 days. Raising silkworms on the floor has a larger area so the silkworms can eat more and produce heavier cocoons. When the silkworms are ready to "ripe", farmers stretch a net on the floor, and the silkworms crawl up the net to hide.

Mr. Pham Van Viet, a farmer with more than 20 years of experience in growing mulberry and raising silkworms in Dak Lua commune, compared raising silkworms on the floor with many benefits compared to the traditional method, especially saving a lot of labor. Previously, on average, 1 worker, 1 batch could only raise about 40kg of cocoons, but now they can raise 100kg of cocoons. The productivity and quality of cocoons raised in the new way are also better.

Qualified to form a craft village

Not only has a large-scale specialized mulberry growing and silkworm raising area been established, this locality has also established a cooperative with a chain linking production to processing to produce high-quality silk products for the domestic market and export.

Talking about the economic efficiency of mulberry growing and silkworm raising, Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, a farmer who has been involved in mulberry growing and silkworm raising for more than 10 years in Dak Lua commune, shared that his family has been involved in mulberry growing and silkworm raising for a long time because this model brings higher economic efficiency compared to the production of other crops. But more importantly, in the locality, there is a cooperative that produces silk and buys silkworm cocoons for farmers at good prices. Farmers are assured because participating in the mulberry growing and silkworm raising chain ensures the output of the products.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Dong, Director of Duy Dong Mulberry and Silk Cooperative (Dak Lua Commune) said that the cooperative's silk production workshop is creating regular jobs for 40 local workers. At first, the facility was operated by manual machinery, cooking silk in pots and spinning silk by hand. During the development process, the cooperative has invested nearly 20 billion VND in the workshop and automatic machinery system to produce silk with large output and high quality.

This source of silk is currently provided by the cooperative to silk weaving villages in many provinces and cities across the country, and partly to the export market. The current market demand for silk is not enough to meet demand. Thanks to that, the cooperative is purchasing the cocoons of the breeders at a good price, so that the mulberry growers and silkworm breeders can rest assured and stick with it for many years.

According to Vice Chairman of Dak Lua Commune People's Committee Doi Xuan Thuy, Dak Lua is a remote commune with a large concentration of ethnic minorities such as Tay, Nung, Dao, Cao Lan... Previously, people's lives were still difficult. In building new rural areas, the locality focused on developing agricultural production. In particular, the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms is one of the main occupations of the locality; contributing greatly to the overall development of the local economy. The commune is completing procedures to recognize the craft village of growing mulberry and raising silkworms with many support policies to help this craft village develop further.
