(Dan Tri) - "Randomly choosing subjects other than math and literature leads to students having to take exams in subjects that are not in their orientation, thereby causing psychological "shock" and stress before the exam for them."


This issue was raised by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City in the second document providing comments on a number of contents proposed to amend and supplement the regulations on secondary school and high school admissions of the Ministry of Education and Training .

According to the opinion of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the decision on the third exam subject must ensure that it does not affect psychological issues, the review process and the choice of subjects at high school level of students.

Based on the 2018 generaleducation program, high school has 6 compulsory subjects including literature, math, foreign language, physical education, national defense and security education, history, of which foreign language is compulsory for students to study throughout grade 3 to grade 12.

The remaining subjects include natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology), history, geography, technology and information technology. When entering high school, students may not choose to study them during the three years of study, due to their career orientation.

Therefore, according to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, randomly selecting subjects other than math and literature leads to students having to take exams in subjects that are not in their orientation, thereby causing psychological "shock" and stress before the exam for them.

Choosing a foreign language as the third subject ensures psychological stability, consistent with the career orientation goals of all students.

At the same time, choosing a foreign language meets the goal of gradually making English the second language in schools and aiming for learners to become global citizens in the future.

Regarding the organization of the 10th grade entrance exam, the draft provides the following content: The basis for admission is the training results and learning results of the years of general education program at the junior high school level or the continuing education program at the junior high school level of the admission subject. If a grade is repeated, the results of the repeated year of that grade will be used.

The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City believes that using the training results and learning results of four years of secondary school as a basis for admission can create unfair problems in admission, leading to a lack of consensus from parents.

The reason is that students' learning outcomes at schools can be affected by many different factors, such as area, people, physical facilities, etc. This affects students' learning outcomes, creating a "skew" in teachers' evaluation results, and in the long run, causes the situation of "beautifying" academic records to increase opportunities for students.

Proposal to give local authorities the initiative in the 10th grade exam

The Department of Education and Training proposed to give the departments the initiative in organizing the 10th grade exam. This includes choosing a third exam subject that is suitable to the characteristics and development needs of the locality; developing regulations for organizing work, invigilation, grading and marking; deciding on the time to announce results and benchmarks.
