How to choose a subject combination for grade 10 to avoid being "offside" in university admissions

(Dan Tri) - Choosing a subject combination from grade 10 is closely related to the high school graduation exam and university entrance exam of students later.

The 2018 generaleducation program stipulates compulsory subjects and elective subjects according to orientation. Of which, 4 compulsory subjects are evaluated by scores: math, literature, foreign language and history.

Students must choose 4 more out of 11 elective subjects including: physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, history, geography, economic and legal education, technology - industrial orientation, technology - agricultural orientation, fine arts and music.

However, in reality, students do not have many choices. Each high school will build certain groups of combinations and students must choose from those groups.

In the 2024-2025 school year, in response to changes in the new university admission regulations, many schools have changed their subject combination policies. In addition to having to base on resources and facilities, schools seek to balance students' strengths and weaknesses with the requirements of universities.

The leader of a high school in Hanoi shared that starting from the next school year, the school's social science elective groups will be built according to the rule that they must always have at least 1 of the 4 natural sciences: physics, chemistry, biology, and information technology.

“The fact that many major universities have stopped considering admission to block C00 (literature, history, geography) shows that students should not be allowed to study too socially skewed subjects when entering grade 10 if they do not want to lose their chance at university.

When society is strong, students need to study natural subjects to improve their analytical and logical skills," said the principal.

He also affirmed that designing complexes that are too socially skewed will also disadvantage students in the future.

“Today’s labor market is changing, and jobs in the social sector are increasingly becoming interdisciplinary. If you plan to pursue a social career in the future, you should not only study literature, history, and geography, but also biology and computer science to gain more skills and knowledge about people,” the principal advised.

From this basis, he suggested elective subject combinations that are suitable for social orientation and compatible with new enrollment trends such as: geography, economic and legal education, biology, informatics; geography, economic and legal education, biology, fine arts/music; geography, biology, informatics, fine arts/music...

Mr. Nguyen Duc Tung, a math teacher in Hanoi, gives 2 secrets to choosing the correct subject combination from grade 10.

One is to identify the subjects that students get the highest scores in and are most interested in at secondary school. Two is to identify the groups of professions that are favorite and suitable for the family's goals and advantages. Three is to find out the admission information of universities that train the target group of professions to see which groups of blocks they consider for admission.

“For example, if your family has a tradition in the medical field and you want your child to study medicine, choose a combination of physics, chemistry, biology, and information technology.

“If students plan to pursue law or economics, choose a combination of physics, economics and law. If students dream of developing in the fields of architecture or fine arts, choose a combination of computer science and physics,” Mr. Tung analyzed.

According to Mr. Tung, what is equally important is that students need to study all the required subjects, especially math and literature, solidly and evenly. Because these are the two basic subjects that appear in the most university entrance exam combinations.
