EURO host but Germany team wore away kit when playing Hungary, why?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/06/2024

Coming out of the tunnel of the Stuttgart Arena, all the German players were wearing smart jackets. However, after the national anthem, more than 54,000 fans were surprised when "The Tanks" wore eye-catching purple-pink uniforms instead of the familiar white. This is the uniform that the German team often uses when playing friendly matches away from home before EURO 2024.

On page X (formerly Twitter), fans were wondering. An account named Adam Jordani asked: “As the host of EURO, why are they wearing away jerseys? Why isn’t the German team wearing white as usual? It’s hard to understand.”

One account named William Chester commented: “Perhaps the German team wanted to show off their kit. This is completely appropriate after a colorful opening match. The away kit they chose for the match against Hungary was as colorful and attractive as their style of play.”

Very quickly, German newspapers also found out the reason. On BILD , a representative of the German Football Federation (DFB) revealed: “We want to bring good news to German fans that the team has achieved a record number of away jerseys sold. This is unprecedented in the history of the German team participating in EURO. This shirt comes in many colors and Adidas - the manufacturer said it represents the diversity of the German team's support community. Using the away jersey is also our way of thanking all those who have always followed and supported the German team around the world .”

Wearing the away kit did not affect the players' performance too much. Coach Julian Nagelsmann's players still played overwhelmingly, winning easily 2-0 against Hungary. The DFB also added that if nothing changes, the German team will continue to wear the away kit in the final match of the group stage against Switzerland.

Changing jerseys but the German team still won easily

The German team's home jersey is also very meaningful.

Speaking of colors, the German national team’s home kit also raises many questions. On the flag, Germany only has 3 colors: red, black and yellow. However, “The Tanks” have remained loyal to the white shirt for decades.

The white shirt became the traditional outfit of the German team for a long time.

BILD explains: “This shirt color is similar to the flag of Prussia - a territory and a kingdom that existed in German history. This was a powerful empire in Europe, with a black cross on a white background. Later, the cross was replaced by the famous black eagle symbol. When the German football team was founded in 1899, the leaders decided to use white as the main color on the Prussian flag. Germany has kept it for many years, as a reminder of its glorious past.”
