According to La Vanguardia , former Barca coach Xavi Hernandez revealed that Messi's return to Camp Nou in 2023 was almost complete. Messi himself was very keen to return to his old club, but the deal was ultimately halted by President Joan Laporta.
President Laporta is concerned that Messi's return could cause serious problems in the team's wage structure. "Laporta told me that it could open up a wage war in the dressing room, and he won't allow that to happen," Xavi told La Vanguardia.
Xavi's statements about President Laporta and himself immediately became a hot topic in the Spanish media. This was especially true as Barca was holding elections for president and board of directors, and Joan Laporta was seeking re-election to the top position at the Catalan giant.
In a recent press conference, when asked directly whether he feared Lionel Messi or Jorge Messi (Messi's father and agent) might speak out in the coming days, President Laporta frankly replied: "No, absolutely not."
“I’m sure that if Jorge spoke up, he would say the same thing as me, because that’s how the conversation goes, unless they change their story. But I don’t think he won’t, because Jorge and I always understand each other,” Joan Laporta confidently asserted.
The Barca president also didn't forget to mention Xavi and his previous statements: "In this context, Xavi's comments are completely unhelpful. Will he take away any of my votes? The election results will tell."
Furthermore, Laporta revealed that when Messi returned to PSG after his success at the 2022 World Cup, Jorge Messi visited the Barcelona president's home. There, Messi's father discussed the Argentine superstar's future and suggested that Miami would be a better place for him than Saudi Arabia or Barcelona, as Messi would no longer face any pressure there.
