President Vo Van Thuong presided over the official welcoming ceremony for President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the Presidential Palace.
At the welcoming ceremony this morning, President Vo Van Thuong and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev performed the flag-saluting ceremony and reviewed the honor guard of the Vietnam People's Army.
After the welcoming ceremony, the two leaders will hold talks to discuss bilateral cooperation and witness the signing of cooperation documents. President Tokayev will also pay a courtesy call to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, meet with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, and have a number of activities in Hai Duong and Bac Ninh provinces.

Mr. Tokayev paid an official visit to Vietnam from August 20-22 at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong. This is Mr. Tokayev's first visit to Vietnam since taking office in 2019, and also the first visit to Vietnam by a Kazakh President in the past 12 years.
Kazakhstan is a Central Asian country with an area of over 2.7 million square kilometers and a population of over 19 million people. It is an important transit hub for goods by land from Asia to Europe. Vietnam and Kazakhstan established diplomatic relations on June 29, 1992. Last year, the two countries celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of relations.
Since the Vietnam-Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Free Trade Agreement, which includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan, took effect in 2016, two-way trade between Vietnam and Kazakhstan has increased by an average of 28% per year. Bilateral trade in 2022 is expected to reach nearly 600 million USD. The two sides aim to increase trade to 1.5 billion USD by 2030.
In the first four months of 2023, bilateral trade reached 124.2 million USD, up 34.5% over the same period in 2022.
Regarding investment, Kazakhstan has 5 FDI projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of 500,000 USD, focusing on the fields of science, technology, information and communication, wholesale, retail and repair.
Vietnam Railways Corporation and Kazakhstan state company Temir Zholy have deployed container transportation in international transit between Vietnam, China, Kazakhstan and Russia.
At the end of 2022, a direct flight route between Almaty and Nha Trang was opened. Almaty is a major economic center and a famous tourist destination in the Central Asian country. Tourists from Kazakhstan to Vietnam reach about 10,000 each year. There are about 50 Vietnamese people living in Kazakhstan.
