DTO - On the afternoon of June 7, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Phuoc Thien chaired an online meeting with localities on preparing and implementing plans to prevent, combat and overcome the consequences of natural disasters in the province.
According to the Provincial Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Search and Rescue (PCLB&TKCN), since the beginning of the year, the province has experienced 8 heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, killing 1 person, completely collapsing 12 houses, blowing off the roofs of 155 houses, 1 agency headquarters; and knocking down perennial trees, fruit trees, etc.
In addition, landslides continue to occur in communes, wards and towns in the province, directly affecting people's lives. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 2 landslides on Tien and Hau rivers, with a landslide length of 120m and an area of 1,580m2. There have been 18 landslides in Cao Lanh district, Chau Thanh district and Sa Dec city. The total property damage caused by natural disasters is about 8.89 billion VND.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, El Nino is likely to appear in late May and early June 2023 with a probability of about 70-80% and may last until early 2024. Under the influence of El Nino, rainfall is often reduced in most regions of the country, commonly from 25-50%.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Phuoc Thien delivered a concluding speech at the meeting.
To ensure response plans for natural disasters and the impacts of El Nino in the province in the coming time, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Phuoc Thien requested sectors and localities to develop response plans for drought and saltwater intrusion situations suitable to local production and living conditions; monitor weather and hydrological conditions to proactively take appropriate response measures.
The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also requested localities to forecast and review areas at high risk of landslides; research and propose support policies and relocate people to residential clusters and routes suitable to the actual situation. Regarding the popularization of swimming, schools and localities must adjust swimming teaching programs for children, focusing on building concentrated swimming spots under the supervision of adults to create playgrounds and improve children's swimming skills...
