The market opened in the red after data showed the number of jobs in the US private sector unexpectedly fell in June and last month's job growth was lower than initially estimated.
However, the market reversed course after US President Donald Trump announced that his country and Vietnam had reached a trade agreement.
President Donald Trump's administration also hinted that a deal with India would be announced soon, but said other deals might not be ready before July 9.
At the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange, the S&P 500 index rose 29.41 points, or 0.47%, to 6,227.42 points. The Nasdaq technology index rose 190.24 points, or 0.94%, to 20,393.13 points.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 10.52 points to 44,484.42, but remained near its record closing high of December 4 last year.
Investors have been somewhat relieved by the progress on trade and the deal with Vietnam is welcome news, said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Global Advisors in Boston.
