US stocks in turmoil, President Trump says it's a great time to buy

US President Donald Trump called on stock investors to calm down after four consecutive days of declines.

According to CNBC , 3 minutes after the US stock market opened in red on April 9, US President Donald Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social: “CALM DOWN! Everything will be fine. America will grow stronger and become better than ever!”.

In a follow-up post, Mr. Trump emphasized in capital letters: “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!”

The caption was followed by the abbreviation DJT, which is also the stock code of Mr. Trump’s company Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. The stock price then skyrocketed.

At the opening of the session on April 9 (US time), the Dow Jones index fell 200 points. After that, the major indexes all increased slightly, in which the S&P 500 increased 0.5%, Nasdaq Composite increased 1.4% while the Dow Jones inched up 57 points, or 0.1%.

Tech stocks including Apple, Nvidia, Tesla and Palantir all rose more than 3%, signaling that investors could be buying at bargain prices while stocks are relatively cheap. However, the stock gains may be fleeting as investors remain concerned about an escalating trade war.

US stocks rose even as China and the European Union announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods.

Accordingly, China announced to impose 84% tariffs on US goods starting April 10. This move comes after the US imposed cumulative tariffs of up to 104% on Chinese goods. The EU also approved the first round of tariffs on US goods effective April 15.
